Only in Ohio...it's like our river here. I can't think of anyone stupid enough to swim in it. Maybe that's a good thing...
AKRON, Ohio - The U.S. Geological Survey has detected hepatitis A virus in the stretch of the Cuyahoga River between Akron and Cleveland.
The virus may be entering the water through Akron's sewage system. Other bacteria, viruses and parasites that can trigger diseases also were found in the Cuyahoga River sampling.
The presence of hepatitis poses a threat to anyone swimming, wading or paddling in the river, said Dr. Michael Beach, an epidemiologist with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
But because few people use the river between Akron and Cleveland for recreational activities, he said, that probably reduces the health threat.
Hepatitis A attacks the liver and can cause fever, nausea and diarrhea.
Michael McGlinchy, director of Akron's Public Utilities Bureau, said city officials were aware of the report but aren't certain the sewage system was responsible for the presence of the virus. Hepatitis A could be passing through the plant, getting into the river from combined sewers, or coming from a tributary, he said.
The CDC said hepatitis A is killed by adequate chlorination.
Elaine Marsh of the Friends of the Crooked River, an Akron-based organization devoted to the Cuyahoga, said she was angered by the findings. "It's proof that we need to do more to clean up our waterways, especially when people's health is at risk," she said.

Ew, I know. Some rivers, I can see, but definitely not in a state as populated as Ohio is. Rivers in like South Carolina or Nebraska are probably fine but Ohio, New York, Massachusetts, etc.? No way.

We've got the whole nuclear power plant thing going on, too. It just reopened after the near contamination incident.

Seeing as how my major river nearby (the Delaware) was just the victim of a nice happy oil spill (sigh... heavy crude, nonetheless) that the asshats failed to contain (yeah, it washed out into the frigging bay 30 miles downriver) and it's already infested with mercury from when industry sucked (more), I don't think I'll be pulling a Washington anytime soon... Honestly, the nukes are probably one of the few water-locked industries I'm not worried about
