Q: Is it true that the government tracks printouts from color printers?
A: Because color laser printers do such a good job of reproducing original documents, they're a favorite among counterfeiters. Some color laser printers encode a serial number and manufacturing code on each printed document using millimeter-sized yellow dots. The dots are invisible to the naked eye but show up under a blue LED flashlight. The government says it tracks printers only in criminal cases.

Heh, busted. I guess that's one way to try and get out of having to compare the marks made on sheets of paper by the printer, like they always do in CSI.

Couldn't a death threat writer just find those dots and remove them from the page, though?

Yeah, why haven't they showed this off on CSI yet?

It might be a brand-new technology. Maybe CBS didn't know it existed yet to put it in episodes. I imagine we'll see it before too long.

The other thing I remember them doing with printers was only because there was a watermark on the actual piece of paper and the printer's ink cartridge wasn't aligned right so there was a noticeable faded spot along the side.

They make the criminals on CSI do the dumbest things. After watching CSI, it seems like a person could commit the perfect crime. Wear gloves, don't leave the murder weapon behind and don't dispose of it 10 feet from the crime scene, don't print your death threats/ransom notes on your printer, your wife's printer, or your secretary's printer, burn evidence, etc.

Yeah, I've told Vengeance that CSI basically tells you how to commit a crime by telling you what not to do
