I finished it up and i gots to say wow, Dark New Day is good stuff.  It has lots of Sevendustish sounding stuff, but it sounds really fresh.  Get your hands on it as soon as you can.  I'd send it to ya, but im still having internet issues, and having to rely on dialup for now.

Fear Factory-Transgression

A'ight, so this album don't come out til tomorrow, but thanks to friends I got it early.  It kicks ass!  This album may be the most solid FF album so far.  It has the same kickass riffage as Demanufacture and 2003's Archetype, but elaborates on the vocal experimentation of Obsolete and Digimortal.  There might be more melodic singing on this album than on any previous Fear Factory outing, which is saying a lot.  Burton C. Bell, has from the very first album been a huge benefactor to the scream AND sing metal genre.  His singing (and screaming) voice has really managed to evolve over the years from a 311-ish nick hexum singing voice back on 1990s Concrete/Soul of a New Machine to his own unique harmonized singing style of the last few years.  His screaming also evolved from an ugly bark to a more refined yell thats not too hard on the ears really.  The guitars on this album are more experimentive, in terms of lots of new rhythms (the guitars are always very percussive though) and atmospheres.  We see Whammy Pedal squeals, volume pedal swells, and even ballady clean guitar parts on this album, all of which are shockingly good additions to the traditional jackhammer guitar formula.  The bass floats around in parts that are different from the guitars, a change from 2003's Archetype.  Raymond Hererra's drumming is always damn solid, and he's still the most talented drummer i have ever heard.  There is no one else on Earth who is as efficient with those doublebass foot pedals as this guy.  Standout tracks include 540,000 Degrees Farenheit, Spinal Compression, and Echoes of my Scream.
Finally, I have to commend Fear Factory's choice of covers.  In the past, they covered such songs as "Dog Day Sunrise", Gary Numan's "Cars", and Nirvana's "School", giving all their unique twist and really matching the songs with the rest of the albums.  This album's obligatory cover song is no different, though oddly more famous.  They chose U2's "I will Follow" this go around.  And they pull it off really well.  The music, though downtuned, sounds pretty much the same as the original, though there are more wildly heavy guitars here.  Burton's vocals do the Bono thing most of the song, but he also adds some yelled vocals at times to put a little more feeling and drama into the song.  All in all I was impressed.  A 90s/2000s industrial metal band pulling off an 80s pop song could be a hard sell, but these guys nailed it well enough.

Might as well chime in with my latest two acquisitions. I snagged the upcoming Our Lady Peace as well as the re-release of The Killers' "Hot Fuss" the other day.

I don't have the receipt to know which order they rang up in, so I'll have to give you the last three CDs I bought. Audioslave's Out of Exile was the only "Hey, let's try this" purchase, and I like it pretty well. The other two were the beginings of an attempt to legalize my musical collection, I bought the Killers rerelease we just talked about, and Gorillaz's Demon Days. I already downloaded both albums a while ago, but I wanted the real CDs.

The Audioslave is good. There's some tracks on there that I really like. And The Killers is definitely nice. Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll is an awesomely awesome song - wish it was on the original release.

Mkay, havent had time to listen to them yet, but what I have heard was friggin awesome.  Today was a GOOD day for CD releases (sorry Im not reviewing but i just wanted to make sure I post before moving back to Nebraska tomorrow and not having internet for who knows how long):

Coheed & Cambria: Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV...  Continuing the evolving storyline from their other albums, which I haven't been that fond of.  I saw the video for "Welcome Home" the first single off this album (kinda Zeppelin-esque, harder riffage than any other song i've heard by them, and badass dueling solos at the end) and was convinced I HAD to buy this album, even if only the one song is good, I'm banking its all choice though.

Disturbed: Ten Thousand Fists (the two songs I already heard were awesome, and the cover of Genesis' (Phil Collins) Land of Confusion is definitely good.  I still have to listen to the other 11 songs.

God Forbid: IV: Constitution of Treason (looks like a concept album, seems interesting... kind of a tale of one man rising against the corrupt government, becoming martyred and sparking a revolution.  It looks like a Jesus for America kinda thing.  we'll see how it pans out).

A Beautiful Lie from 30 seconds to Mars is on my buy buy buy list. I think I'm going to like it. Where have I been that I never really listened to this group before?

I don't know, Super and I got their first album back in 2002 and it was awesome!  (Better than the new one if you ask me).  Much heavier than the new one, but the new one has a TON of good new tunes.  Jared Leto is the exception to the actor-turned-sucky-rockstar trend.  The man has a vision and creates an awesome musical spectrum.
I saw em live back in 2003 with my bro in Des Moines Iowa.  Drove through a snow storm (a friggin blizzard!) to see them open for Chevelle (30stm stole the show), and then trudged slowly back through the snow to Omaha.  After they got off the stage, they were very gracious and came out to sign autographs (my bro got a couple things signed) and mingle with the crowd.  A scary trip, but well worth the hassle.  If you EVER get a chance to go see them, you MUST go!

Yeah, 30 Seconds to Mars is damn good. They've got a lot of songs that I like a lot. And Rolando is definitely right: A Beautiful Lie is good, but the self-titled is the better of the two.

I'm definitely going to have to check the first one out. I was really surprised that they were good because of Leto. You're right, Rolando. He's broken the trend of rock stars not being able to really be actors and vice versa. He really seems to keep the two aspects separate and I really like that.

Jared Leto is one of my all-time favorite actors so me finding out he was in that band was huge news for me.

he played everything except drums on the first album, and hes the singer.  He is very rockstarish on stage, but i dont care, he's good.  Got a badass looking guitar too.  It's a custom made Explorer shaped guitar with a Pegasus carved into the face of it.  Its suh weet!

so its been awhile.... I've bought quite a few CDs while here...

"Next" by Sevendust
So they added Sonny Mayo of Snot fame after Clint Lowery left the group.  This albums a lot better than I thought it would be.  Much the same as many of their older albums, though heavier in general than their last album "Seasons" was.

"Alaska" by Between the Buried and Me
A good effort from one of the new metalcore bands out there, though the production isn't as slick as it could be.

"Hypnotize" by System of a Down
The second half to this years "Mesmerize".  It's not as varied in sounds, but I like it much better.  Some good heaviness, and good melodies.

"Playing the Angel" by Depeche Mode
Once again these guys show me why they're pretty much my favorite group ever even though they're not metal in any way.  A darker edge than their last albums, this one's almost NINish at times.  BUY IT NOW

Fort Minor (I forgot the albums title)
THis is the solo rap album from Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park fame.  It kicks ass!  some good intelligent rap that doesnt grate or make no sense.  I bought this on a whim, and was very satisfied with the purchase.

"Alive or Just Breathing" (Reissue) by Killswitch Engage
I already had the original, but the extras made this one wellworth picking up.  My favorite of the metalcore groups, lots of melody and singing to mix in with the screaming.

"Dark Ages" by Soulfly
So continues the Raga-tribal metal output.  These guys always put out good bonesimple metal, with some nice additions like horns, tribal drums, and flamenco guitars.  Badass.

"One Nation Underground" by Ill Nino
Nu-metal with a Spanish twist.  half the lyrics are in Spanish, and they add nice flamenco flourishes too.

"All The Right Reasons" by Nickelback
The newest Nickelback album is pretty good.  I admit they're kinda bland, poppy, etc, but I have a soft spot for them.  Guest appearances include Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top fame and Dimebag Darrell (a solo comprised of outtakes spliced together, it sounds waaay better than you'd think).

There's more but I cant remember em off the top of my head right now.

I actually removed that program since it was such a resource hog. I could send it to you or something, though.
