NEW YORK (AP) -- A police officer rescued an 8-month-old boy from the frigid waters off Staten Island after he saw the baby's father jumping with him into the harbor.
"It was crying. It was in distress," Officer Brian Sheehy, 29, said of the baby who had been floating on his back about 20 feet from shore Thursday morning.
Nacir Walker was rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital Staten Island, where he was listed in stable condition. His father, 32-year-old Charles Walker, was pronounced dead, police said. Walker had attacked his ex-girlfriend Roshuana Tate, the baby's mother, two hours earlier as she walked near her apartment, police Sgt. Michael Wysokowski said.
He grabbed the baby, went to the harbor and jumped off a dock with the child, police said.
Tate, 22, was listed in stable condition at the same hospital as her young son.
