Sprint Nextel denies AT&T as sponsor in Cup Series

If anyone didn't know, Cingular and AT&T Wireless merged awhile ago and operate under the name Cingular Wireless. Well, for some weird reason, probably because of AT&T's merger with SBC, Cingular is changing it's name back to AT&T. How does this affect Jeff Burton's #31 Cingular Wireless team? Sprint said heck no to allowing the name switch on the car. I think Sprint Nextel is being very hypocritical. If it weren't for them merging with Nextel, Nextel would have never allowed Sprint into the sport. In fact, it's the same friggin company. It's still the same company from the original Cingular/AT&T Wireless merger. It's only a name change. So what if Alltel changed its name to, say, Notel and changed its logo and colors? Would Sprint Nextel allow it? It's all so stupid.

This is dumb. They don't want the competition? I find this laughable since Viagra was a sponsor for such a long time. I find that more offensive than having two communications teams out there. How about the #8 and the #2 going at it?

If you've noticed in the Busch Series, Anheuser-Busch is a lot nicer in letting other sponsors in. At least as of last year, there was a Miller High Life car out on the track, obviously a competitor of Anheuser-Busch. So Sprint Nextel is just being way too over-the-top. We get it, Nextel is the sponsor of the series. We get it. They have their black and yellow logos plastered all over the place. We can see that. Having other wireless companies out there does not distract from their brand recognition. In fact, it's actually hurting it because people are going to get bitter about Sprint Nextel not allowing some sponsors in. When I see the Cingular or Alltel car out there driving around, I really don't see any difference. We get bombarded by Sprint, Cingular, and Alltel commercials every time we turn on the TV, whether or not a race is on.
