It seems AOL has decided to send everybody some kind of notification to their AIM mail, which I'm sure most of you don't use, but you may be stuck wondering, "What the hell is this weird icon on AIM, and why won't it stop blinking?" I'm using some ancient version of AIM, so it looked like some kind of 3-colored blob rather than a mail box. It took me a while to figure out how to get rid of it. I thought I'd share my discovery:

My AIM > Edit Options > Edit Preferences > Mail

Uncheck everything.

Or use gaim.

I've used the AIM mail checker thing before and not had the ghetto fabulous icon in the systray.

I use Trillian and it keeps telling me I have AOL Mail. I'm like WTF? I don't even use that. So, when I click on the box, it takes me to AOL but forces me to sign up for some reason to even see the mail. I don't know why I can't sign in with my screen name...

I'm pretty sure there's a way to disable it in trillian as well.  It's just buried deep in the options.

Found this on anantech forums, hope it helps:

It actually doesn't bug me much. The only time it pops up is when Trillian loads and it tells me I have mail in my various accounts (Hotmail and Yahoo)
