Ideally, connecting to multiple sources at once would let you achive extreme download rates.  Not so for me.  I can grab a file off of a single internet server at lke 250k/s, but when I'm connected to like 20 people?  I rarely top 30.  I'll be getting like < 1k/s from each of them.

It may be all about the trackers you're using. If you're using public trackers, it's entirely possible that people are being scrooges and limiting their upload bandwidth. If you get on private trackers with good seeders, it's very possible to get upwards of 400KB/sec.
