Katrina could turn out to be to most destructive hurricane ever. Not only in New Orleans (I don't even want to look at any more pictures) and in Gulfport and Biloxi along the Gulf Coast. It's hitting hard here right now and it's two days later. Not with weather, though.
Georgia only has enough gas in reserve for 10 days. And we're not going to be able to get anymore because the fuel lines are down coming from the hurricane area. By the Labor Day weekend, some stations around here will be empty. Prices are going through the roof and we're sure to see $3/gallon very soon. That's bad enough for the commuters but the biggest crisis is that we do have the largest airport in the world. There's no immediate word on what's going to happen to flights to and from Hartsfield/Jackson. With New Orleans airport shut down, this is going to be a major pain in the butt.
The whole hurricane situation has me a little upset because we lived in Biloxi for three years and Elmono and I cruised the New Orleans streets so much waiting for RichN on his TDYs. His flights were never on time so Elmono and I walked the French Quarter, shopped on Jackson Square and probably named every single animal at the nice zoo. Seeing all that destruction makes me want to cry.
So what does some asshole in our fantasy football league do? He lives in Omaha so he has no idea what it's like to even be remotely affected by any of this. He went and changed his team name to Katrina and the Waves. When I complained, I was dismissed as a hysterical bitch. I'm about ready to quit the league which I have been a part of for a very long time. Am I overreacting? I just think it's insensitive. That's like calling your team The World Trade Center Ragheads or something.
And I'm so glad to see that so many Hollywood celebrities and other nations are rushing to aid people in the hurricane areas. I can turn off the sarcasim now, I guess. Definitely some Grrr feelings from me right now.

Yeah, I'm also more personally affected by what happened down there since I used to live in Biloxi and also went to New Orleans on numerous occasions. In fact, New Orleans was one of the must-go-to destinations I planned on taking Vengeance and Demon Child to on a vacation. Now, I just don't know.
What's this moron's e-mail address so I can unleash Vengeance on him? You should have the other guys in the league get on his case, too.

Actually, RichN is going to contact the five commissioners in the league (RichN is one and so is the asshole) and request that any sensitive names not be used for the league. He knows how much this is upsetting me. Elmono, I don't know if you remember the guy but it's Joe. He's always been an asshole. RichN is home tomorrow and I might send an email myself to the commissions and explain why I feel the way I do. My side of the family went through all the Florida shit last year and that left me exhausted just with worry. Now seeing a city that I love totally destroyed is enough to put me over.
Plus, our gas prices are now at the $3/gallon mark AND we have lines about 40-50 cars deep at all the stations. RichN has enough gas to get home from the airport but he's going to have to endure the lines to get to work on Friday. I just filled up my car yesterday morning (at $2.59/gallon and I was pissed then but freaking thrilled now) so I think we'll be OK to get to Florida for the weekend. If not, we'll hit some bumm*you know what* small south Georgia station for fuel on Friday night.
The numbers of deaths from this storm is expected to be in the thousands. Damages in the hundreds of billions. And I keep seeing all the utility trucks heading south. It's like a funeral procession. Yeah, Joe is a complete asshole.

I figured out what I'm going to do with the asshole and the league. I won't field a team against him anytime we play each other. I'll go 0-2 for the principle of the whole thing. And the commissioners will all know it. They hate it when someone doesn't field a team for the week.

I've never been anywhere near any of the affected areas nor have I ever seen hurricane damage firsthand, so I really have no idea what these people are going through. All I can do is put myself in their shoes and imagine how the must feel. I don't know what I would do if all I had was what I was able to carry.
I definitely agree with you on the guy in your league. What an ass. I don't know what you can do outside of complaining to the commissioners and doing what you said, not fielding a team when you play him. Unfortunately, that most likely won't do anything to this guy since he's such an unfeeling bastard to begin with, but if it makes the commissioners take notice and they do something, then it would be worth it.
I'm with Chris on the visiting of New Orleans. He's obviously been there and like I said, I've been nowhere near the city, but I've thought for several years that it is a place I'd like to someday visit.

Thank you Super for your reponse. I know Elmono and I are kind of emotionally connected with all this but you are an unbiased person and your words meant a lot. Even if you had said something opposite of what I was expressing, I would have valued your opinion.
RichN did post something to the commissioners. Asshole was the only one to respond and it was his typical snide self. I've already drafted something to send out before our season starts next Thursday. I will not field a team against Asshole at all. Not with the current team name. I'm not going to "play" with someone who takes the lives of thousands of people and makes a joke about it.
Here's the response, I came up with:
To Pentacom ?
This may sound like I?m being overly sensitive but at the moment, I don?t care. I am very appalled that Joe changed his team name to what he did. I voiced my opinion and wasn?t taken seriously. A hurricane and the aftermath, especially one this devastating, is not a laughing matter. It really hits close to home for me. I lived in Biloxi for three years. A lot of that is gone now. My son and I were very frequent visitors to New Orleans and he is just horrified at what happened there. It was one of the places he was looking forward to showing his wife and her daughter. That?ll never be a reality now. My entire side of the family went through all the Florida hurricanes last season and it wasn?t a funny time. Thousands of people have died because of the hurricane and more will follow. I?m not sure you even realize that destruction we had even here in Georgia. In fact, we?re still reeling from it since we can?t get any gasoline because the lines are broken.
I just wanted to express my opinion. I thought the GAFFL team names were supposed to be something that had a meaning for the owner. I?m sorry but Joe?s name is just cruel. I will let you guys handle the situation as you see fit and will refrain from comments to the rest of the league. I only know that I will not be playing against a team with that current name this year. Give me 0-2 for any time that might happen. Yes, I feel that strongly about it.
Thank you for your time.
That gets sent out on Tuesday.

Gas was $3.00 for regular unleaded all over Greenville by the end of the work day. I drove to work on E this morning, not expecting this at all. The stations were packed at lunch, so I took a second "lunch" around 3:00 pm and filled my tank at $2.79 with no wait. Glad I did, it was $2.99 and the parking lot was jammed full when I drove past it after work, but I really wish I'd filled up yesterday. Or in 1999.

The governor of Georgia called a state emergency last night. He will be fining any gas station that is charged inflated prices. Some places were up to $6/gallon last night. We do have gas - people are just panicking. The gas line pumps are back functioning to 35% and it's expected they will be back to normal by the weekend. So we're not in a shortage although the media has reported it that way. It's mass hysteria, cats and dogs living together. I told RichN last night I feel like I'm living in "Red Dawn".

The lowest I saw yesterday was $2.89, but the highest was "only" $2.99. I don't have any idea what the prices might have done overnight. I topped my tank off Monday morning for $2.49 and I'm glad I did.
I was just talking with elmono last night about the prices in 1998-1999, Schmidt. I remember the price being like $.90/gallon then and being able to fill my tank from empty for less than $10.

Has that number for the death count changed? I hadn't heard thousands, but I did hear over one hundred. I'm hoping that people were able to evacuate in time. But some didn't want to. I saw on the news that people were marking houses with black spray paint to let the recovery workers know that there were bodies inside. I am still trying to make sense out of people staying in their homes. I know that it's their home, but it's just a thing. Anyway, as for the guy in the league, tell him he's an insensitive piece of shit and I hope that when a tragedy hits him that someone makes light of it like he's doing to all of those people. I don't, but maybe he'll understand what crude and rude behavior really is if you tell him that. If he thinks that my comment is in bad taste then he'll see what his team name makes people feel. And your WTC ragheads team name was horrifying to me and I hope that you don't give that to him as an example because he'll just use that next. What a freaking jerk. Good for you, disnut, for standing up for what you think is right. I hope RichN will do the same thing and go 0-2, but I doubt it. Not because he's not a great guy, but because he's competitive.

I just drove back from Nebraska, and while prices did climb over the course of my trip, it hadn't hit over $3.00 anywhere I stopped. (Along I-80, US81, I-135, and I-35). Highest I had to pay was just south of Ft. Worth, where it hit $2.79 for the midgrade... they were out of the lowgrade. Trip cost me over $200 for gas though. But it was worth it, good times were had up in the Cornhusker State.

Standard price now here in the Atlanta metro is around $3.19. Most stations aren't even posting the dollar number, just the cents. I guess they can't find their big "3"s. But no more lines. The panic of yesterday has gone away.
Still waiting on the fantasy football thing. RichN has to get home tonight to find out what the emails are being passed around. The commissioners will have to work this out.
And this is really cruel but the asshole that did this is going through an ugly, ugly time in his personal life. Something I'm not supposed to know about. I feel so strongly about this that I'm about ready to change my team name into something to reflect his personal situation. Yeah, Vengeance is rubbing off on me.
And yes, thousands of dead in the southern states. This is going to be worse than what happened on 9/11 and no one is making jokes about that tragic day.
I'm going to Disney World this weekend, I'm having a good time, I'm seeing my side of the family together for the first time in three years and I'm going to try and forget about crap like this for a few days.

They sent the USS Harry S. Truman, an aircraft carrier, was sent to the Gulf for helicopter support and for use as a command post.
Apparently some stupid sniper is posted outside a hospital and firing on rescue workers as they try to bring people out of the hospital.
I heard from someone that martial law was declared for New Orleans but I haven't read anything about it. If they haven't done it, what's taking so long to declare it?
30,000 National Guard troops will be down there in a few days time. Also, 5,000 US Army troops will go down there to take care of the violence and looting.
So far, I have yet to hear anything about any foreign aid whatsoever. The only thing was something said by the UN President about helping or something. I doubt it. Stupid UN.

Who the fuck shoots at a hospital? Seriously, what kind of perverted mind comes up with that brilliant idea? Beyond that, why are people shooting at rescue workers and aide workers? Do you dumb fucks not want any help? If I was down there helping and someone started shooting at me, I'd be tempted to just leave and be like "Fine, dumbasses, help yourselves."
That said, I know it's a small minority that's causing all the problems and most people genuinely want and need help, but it's frustrating even here, more than 500 miles away, seeing people doing the things they're doing.

There's a picture in the AJC today of evacuees coming off a military cargo plane at Dobbins AFB here in Atlanta. It's just so sad. They have absolutely nothing. No clothes, no home, no car, no friends, nothing. I have to say, Atlanta is welcoming people and opening their homes. Yeah, we got smacked with Katrina but we're going to survive with higher gas prices but most of our structures intact.
And the only other response to the asshole in the football league was from another guy who said that I should "lighten up" due to the timing of everything. That set me off. The asshole changed his name the fucking day of the hurricane and *I* should lighten up? RichN is home and I'm posting my response to the commissioners on Tuesday night. That's it. I refuse to play against the bastard.

Um, I'm hoping you forgot that I was in GAFFL too......
Actually, I'm sending my response to the commissions today. I'm that fed up with their lack of response to the whole issue. The season starts in a week so this will give them plenty of time to think about things. I'm pissed, will always be pissed and want them to know it. I think my message is tame enough to explain how I feel and if they don't do anything, well, in week 5, I'll go 0-2. Simple as that.

Here's the asshole's reply to my message of this morning. Now tell me your honest responses to him:
Yes! I'm up 2-0!
I'm feeling the momentum already.
Sorry about your former digs. I too am horrified about what's happening down there. But no one's going to tell me what to name my team. I changed my team name before Katrina even hit landfall. Besides, it's not named after the hurricane, but the 80's pop group that had the hit single "Walking on Sunshine".
I know someone else that needs to walk on a little sunshine.

What's his e-mail? Vengeance can rip him a new one
And, no, I didn't forget you were in GAFFL. Considering I was replying to you, I didn't need to include you in the exception part
And, yes, there is a band called Katrina and the Waves but I think he's trying to cover his ass. He probably noticed there was a band called that, realized Katrina was coming, and renamed his team so he had a reason to cover his ass. Noticed he said he changed the name before Katrina hit landfall, which meant is was already in the Gulf and building up. He knew Katrina was going to wreak havoc.
