OK, the Atlanta metro area is so water logged right now it's ridiculous. So what does that bitch Katrina decide to do? Hit south Florida and then bend up and will be rolling through here on Tuesday. I know by the time she gets here, she's not going to be a hurricane but we just can't handle the water level. Lake Lanier is the highest I've ever seen it. The Chatahootchie River will probably flood somewhere. Downtown Atlanta will probably flood too.
It could be worse. My boss flew down to Florida yesterday. He was supposed to drive from Tampa to Ft. Myers. I hope he was smart and stayed in Tampa since Katrina hit Ft. Myers last night.
BTW - anyone need any floor or wall tiles? I get a 25% employee discount at our two stores. I have to go to Tampa but they do ship the stuff to your house. And it's slightly marked up from wholesale amounts.

Is there a reason that my timing always sucks?

How long is tech school? Hurricane season doesn't "start" until May.
And see how nasty these hurricanes are? Katrina was a "weak" cat 1 going through south Florida. Now she's a bitchy cat 5 hitting the coast. Elmono and I (along with two dogs and one kitten) ran away from the cat 5 Elena back in 1985. Those things are not pretty. I hope the people over there have the sense to get the hell out of the area.

Yeah, super, you're the one that I'm actually the most worried about. You're right on the coast and if you get hit by anything you're going to get hit hard. Just make sure you keep us updated.

Well, it's being predicted that New Orleans is going to be turned into an island. The city is built below sea level to begin with. It's not going to be very pretty there in the next couple of days. Something tells me the name Katrina is going to be retired as a hurrican name.

I don't think there's any doubt about that anymore. It's going to be a mess.

Now I'm concerned about disnut and RichN again because I've been paying more attention to the weather. Supermercado is going to be fine for now on the coast, but the in-laws are looking at some icky weather. And the weather folk said it's going to have a tropical storm strength all the way to Nashville. Batten down the hatches or whatever it is that they say.

Well, the Superdome is still standing although the roof needs to be fixed. Biloxi, our old "hometown" is going to be hit and hit heavy again. Shades of Elena in 1985. New Orleans didn't get it as bad as originally predicted although it'll take a few weeks to dry out. From the limited photos I saw, it looks like everything is fixable. I'm just amazed at the number of people who decided to ride out the hurricane. But then again, the road system around New Orleans isn't condusive to evacuation.
As for us here in north Georgia, I think we'll be fine. Lots of rain for tomorrow but I think we'll miss most of the bitch. The bad part for this area will be that just about all of our power companies and emergency teams will be called into action to help out Mississippi and Alabama.
And I want to know - how many countries who bitched about the US not giving enough after the tsunami hit last year are going to help out us now? Billions of damages in Florida, Mississippi, Louisana, and Alabama so far. And we'll get zippo from anyone. We just rebuild ourselves and don't whine to others. Maybe that's why we are the freaking United States of America. Sorry, I'll get off the soap box now.

From my understanding, Hilton Head has never suffered a direct hit from a hurricane, so the odds of one happening while I'm here is pretty small. Most of them hit further south down on the east coast of Florida or further north near Myrtle Beach and further north up in North Carolina. I listened to CNN most of the day today at work and from pretty much all accounts, it's bad, but nowhere near as bad as it could have been if not for the small turn it made at the last minute. It would have been really really bad had it kept going the way it was, or if it had turned west instead of east. I was thinking, bitterly, about the same thing last night, disnut. How many countries that bitch and moan about us not helping as much as they want are going to lift a finger to help us now? We'll get shit outside of maybe an official "Oh, we're so sorry and feel for the citizens of the United States." Bah. To hell with that. We've scratched your backs - now scratch ours. I guess that's what comes with the territory when you're the most powerful nation on the planet. In all honesty, I'd rather have to rebuild on our own than not be a superpower. Just heard on CNN, Katrina has just been downgraded to a tropical storm.

I was talking to someone at work today that we should just go back to isolationism like before WWII. Let's see how the world likes it if the US isn't around to help. And screw helping other countries out with loads of money when we have our own problems.

Man... I just turned CNN on. They said that they thought there were more than 50 deaths (they're saying about 30 alone at a Biloxi apartment complex, where the storm surge was nearly 25 feet) already confirmed, a levee at Lake Pontchartrain has broken (a 2-block section) and the 80% of the city is now underwater. Man.
I wonder how it would be if we just turned our backs on the world again. Helping other countries is all fine and dandy, but dammit, we do have problems of our own and I don't get why it seems like we care more about other countries than we do about ourselves.

I'll be there from January until 9-18 months later, depending on when school starts. It's a long one.
