And I'm not talking about the band...

http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Movies/06/22/film.moviequotes.list.ap/index.html

This list is pretty accurate. Looking through it, I realize how many of those quotes are a regular part of pop culture and are referenced all the time. I was befuddled with "My precious" from The Two Towers when I realize that that quote is indeed used a lot these days. Of course, a notable one missing was, "No, I am your father!" The Empire Strikes Back (although people misquote it as "Luke, I am your father.")

Let's see the memories those quotes brought back (we did watch most of the telecast) -

Anything with "Gone With the Wind".  Anybody realize that Vivian Leigh was British and had a hard time attempting a Southern accent?  And Clark Gable absolutely hated the role of Rhett Butler.

Marlon Brando had the #2 and the #3 quotes.

"Cool Hand Luke" - that movie had me falling in love with Paul Newman.  The egg eating scene was fantastic.  And George Kennedy was a surprise Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actor.

"Silence of the Lambs" - the last film to win Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Film.

"Jaws" - my damn father actually laughed out loud in a sold out movie theatre when the shark ate Robert Shaw.  I thought I'd just crawl under the seat.

"Shane" - my mother made me watch this one rainy Saturday afternoon.  I think I stopped crying sometime Monday.

"Planet of the Apes" - gosh, I remember the first time I watched that and realized what the hell the ending was all about.  Pre 9/11 of course.

I remember watching "Poltergist" for the first time on HBO.  Our little dog found not one but two scorpions in the house that night.  Talk about totally odd. (We lived in Arizona).

"Rocky" - I watched a very young Slyvester Stallone on the Mike Douglas show that was Philly based.  Stallone was pushing the movie he just finished.  No one thought it would do anything.  Stallone insisted that he star in it since he wrote it.  A year later, the Oscar was brought home and a star was born.

"Dog Day Afternoon" - gotta watch that one again.  That movie is just freaking hilarious. Without intending to be.  One of Pacino's finest films.

And a few they forgot.  From Ghostbusters.  "Listen, smell something?"  "So, she's a bitch".  "IT'S THE STAYPUFF MARSHMELLOW MAN!" "OK, she sleeps above the covers.  Three FEET above the covers".

One of my favorites that's missing, that I more than half-expected to be there: "English, motherfucker! Do you speak it?!" From Pulp Fiction, of course. Of course, it's more profane than the rest of the list...

That's why I was surprised that it was left off the list. But like I said, it's probably because of the profanity.

But the glaring error in that list is, as you said, "I am your father" is missing. Absolutely no reason for that.

Vivian Leigh was British?Huh Wow, she had the accent nailed in A Streetcar Named Desire. I wouldn't have known she had difficulty.

Did you know Lucille Ball was considered for the roll of Scarlett?  Also Joan Crawford.  And Vivian Leigh was married to Sir Lawrence Olivier.

I can't see Lucille Ball, but that's probably because she made her name as a comedienne eventually. Joan Crawford might have worked, but Vivian Leigh had the right amount of innocence for the role I think.

I was about to complain about no Top Gun quotes, but they snuck one in at the end.  No Princess Bride quotes, though?  That movie is almost as quoteable as Monty Python (which isn't American, so thus isn't on the list).  Princess Bride is American though, right?

I guess I must live a sheltered life because I haven't seen/heard many references to a lot of these quotes, to grab a handful:
Quote
26. "Why don't you come up sometime and see me?", "She Done Him Wrong," 1933.

27. "I'm walking here! I'm walking here!", "Midnight Cowboy," 1969.

28. "Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By,"' "Casablanca," 1942.

You do lead a sheltered life, Nathan, but it's not because of those quotes Smiley I've not seen any of the movies your quoted quotes were from, though, so I don't know if that says anything more about me, hehe.

The "Play it, Sam" one is one of the misquoted lines in cinema history. People think it's "Play it again, Sam," but that phrase is never said. It's just simply, "Play it, Sam."

Yeah, that was a weird movie.  Not as weird as Citizen Kane, but still kinda weird.  I'm happy I saw it, but drug at parts.  Thanks to my old college neighbor I've seen many of the AFI top 100 movies, including many such as Citizen Kane and Casablanca on the big screen at the Riepma Ross Theatre at UNL.  I truthfully havent liked many of those top 100 though I do recognize the importance many of them have for introducing new direction into film.
Topping all those was I got to see For a Fistful of Dollars on the big screen.  Sergio Leone Western? check.  Clint Eastwood? check. Awesome soundtrack by Ennio Morricone? check.  All this AND on the bigscreen for a once in a lifetime chance for me, since the movie came out well over 10 years before I was born? damn priceless.

How did you manage that? Although I did get to see Quiet Man on the big screen because I took some seniors from the nursing home I used to work at to the silver screen movie thing at the local theater. They do something once a month where they play a classic.  Smiley

Yeah, a lot of universities do stuff like that. You could probably do stuff like that at BGSU. And if they don't check student IDs, you and Chris could go together. He looks like he could be a student so if they don't check IDs, then they wouldn't look at him twice.

I still need to look into all of the programs at BGSU. I don't want to get through school and then find out that I could have done a lot of things for free that I can't anymore.
