Yay, posting this thread from Linux

So I finally got fed up with the crappy installs of WinXP that I kept getting on the server, so I said "enough is enough" and installed the Ubuntu distribution of Linux. So far I'm quite impressed with it. It looks pretty, appears to work well (although I've not done much of anything with it), and it actually installs, unlike Windows. Heh. I had to actually enable my network card so I can use it (one good thing about Windows, hehe), but once I did that, it's working. I think I can probably get my FTP server back up, but that will probably have to wait until I move to Hilton Head and get everything set up there. And I think Ubuntu has a built-in BitTorrent client, so yay at that. No more using my laptop for BT.

Just an experiment. I figured that I had an extra machine that I can mess with and I think it's having some hardware issues anyway (RAM, maybe), so I might as well try out Linux on it. See how it goes. I haven't had much chance to play with it yet, though. I suppose that will be one of the things I do once I get moved and settled and all of the TV show seasons end and I don't have 4 hours of TV to watch every night.

Heh, I don't remember where I heard of it first, actually. But believe it or not, what finally spurred me on to installing it was the fact that it was mentioned on last week's episode of Veronica Mars. The main character has a friend who's into computers and she was having an argument with another character about OSes and one of them said something about Ubuntu and it made me remember that I'd been wanting to check it out. So I did. And it's good.
Unfortuntely, I think there's still something wrong with my other computer. It's slow and nonresponsive a lot of the time. My guess is that the motherboard is dying or that a stick of RAM is going or has gone bad. Maybe it's time for memtest86 to find out if the RAM is okay. I sure hope it's not the motherboard. Finding a decent replacement for a P3 might be a tough (if cheap) thing to do these days.
