News has it that Barry Bonds has had enough with the media and is saying he's not going to play this season, especially after two knee surgeries. Or maybe it's because with the new steroid screening, he knows he won't be as good...

Dunno about that. I hadn't heard anything. Well, except for the fact that he was out for at least half the season. But that's day-old news.

He's out for at least part of the year, maybe longer.  He's trying to play the big victim like he's the poor star being hounded by the media.  Yes, they've been on him, but he feeds it.  He's over the hill, he's got the cream and the clear and he's just beat.

If he can't handle the heat, he should stay the hell out of the kitchen.  It's called "retirement" and he should look into it.

Damn, why can't professional sportspeople actually have Class anymore?

He wants to break the home run record...

I just read an interesting article in Sports Illustrated about the steroid stuff. Like talks about putting asterisks next to Sosa, McGwire, and Bonds for their achievements and putting them down as nothing but a footnote in the record books.

I'm going to laugh when every single record set between now and 1989 or whenever it was is marked with an asterisk. ESPN is already calling 1989 to 2004 the "juiced era." If the actions of a few puts a black eye on the whole sport... that's beat up.

I think elmono already pointed this out, that roids were not illegal in baseball, just discouraged.  I would just let the asterisk thing drop and blame everything on just another era of ballplayers.  Don't know if you saw the article, but CNN (I think) polled a number of HOF voters and right now they would not vote McGwire in, but would vote Bonds in.

What's the difference between Bonds and McGwire?

Good question.  Some are saying that McGwire had a chance to come clean at the hearing and didn't.  But, has Bonds ever done likewise?  And I hate that they say McGwire was only good because he was on the juice.  Go look at what he looked like in his rookie season of 1987.  He was a skinny kid and still hit 49 HRs.

I'm still skeptical of how much help steroids actually gives to someone, anyway. I've heard several times that hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports. I'm certainly no expert, but it doesn't seem like the steroids would help all that much. If you can hit it 400 feet without them, what's another 50 feet going to matter? 400 feet is going to be a homer most of the time, anyway, isn't it?

Steroids do nothing for eye contact and swinging the bat. Doesn't even help with fielding.

Someone on another message board posted a pic of the old Barry Bonds. Man, he was a skinny guy back then

Someone noted that on his website, www.barrybonds.com, he's now saying that it's time for him to shed some of his muscle mass.  Claims he needs to drop some weight to live longer.  Some are saying that it's just a prelude to having an excuse for getting smaller after going off the juice.

I think McGwire followed his lawyers' advice and it burned him in the public eye (I made my mind up before the hearing, so it didn't change my pov at all), but some people are bitching at him for that.  Claiming all this asterisk crap is just stupid: none of them were ever caught in a test so last I checked, it's innocent until proven guilty and even if they did use, who's to say that had anything to do with their records?

McGwire is being singled out because of the way he handles things; when he retired, he took no interviews for a year, he just completely dipped out of the limelight and walked away.  Now, he's not talking about the past because it's exactly that.  He's a family man and has moved on, the media hasn't.

I think Bonds is trying to play that angle, too, but he's a pompous buttpipe who just comes across as all "woe is me the superstar", not as a normal person.  For the record, I think Bonds' clear/cream statements are crap and he knew what he was doing (he wasn't anything in his early seasons like he is now) whereas McGwire may have used Andro (but I think that's all it was) which was a legal substance at the time and I'm not gonna fault him for doing something that was legal (I don't buy all the misdirection crap).  Additionally, he hit 49 his rookie year, peaked later on for a few years (which was a combination of staying healthy and some eye exercises he did [better vision of the ball, extra time to watch clearly] combined with one of the most killer swings I've ever seen), but nothing like Bonds' pickup.  Like Bonds said "I'm 40 now".

Yeah, I just read how he hit 49 home runs his rookie year so it's quite plausible with time, conditioning, and experience he could slam 70 bombs
