If you haven't been buried under a rock, you'll know by now that Atlanta had a shooting today.  Some idiot prisoner grabbed a deputy's gun, shot her, then shot a judge, a court reporter, and another deputy (outside the courthouse).  He then pistol whipped a local reporter and stole his car and took off.

He's still at large right now.

The entire story was immediately on CNN and all the local channels.  Full picture of the guy.  License plate of the car.  Make, model, the whole thing.  All the overhead signs had the message out.  You couldn't get away from it today.

He's still at large right now.

The guy fired a gun in a courtroom.  Killed three people, severely wounded a fourth.  Then got out of that courtroom.  Beat up a reporter outside and took off.  All while wearing an orange jail uniform.

He's still at large right now.

Update from Saturday morning.

Looks like this guy shot and killed a customs agent, stole his gun and pickup truck and is still on the loose.

All this is happening in the heart of Atlanta.  I guess if you want to disappear from life for a while, hide yourself in plain sight.

I do have to chuckle at one aspect.  Those of you from Bellevue can appreciate this.  Remember that whenever something good happened at Offutt, it was reported as "Offutt AFB in Omaha".  But when something bad happened, like a protest, it was "Offutt AFB outside Omaha in Bellevue".  Right now, each individual section of Atlanta is being segregated.  It's Roswell, Alpharetta, and this latest one is Buckhead.  Buckhead is just a tony, trendy district of Atlanta.  But heavens, we don't want to say the customs agent was killed in Atlanta.  He was killed in the Lenox area of Buckhead.  Just for the record.

More update - they finally caught the guy.  Someone called in that the blue pickup truck was located.  A female hostage was rescued and the suspect taken into custody.

Location - Gwinnett Place Mall.  About ten miles from our house.  Plus RichN was in that area this morning getting the car checked for emissions.

There are a lot more details coming out about this case now that the guy is in custody again.  What he did is horrific.  Not going to get into a debate about this but I'm glad Georgia has the death penalty.

I'm sure this guy's getting the death penalty. Hopefully they just decide to fry him or stick him with a needle or whatever they do in Georgia and not dilly-dally around and let him have another trial.

He'll get the trial as bound by the Constitution.  It'll be a long time, though.

Based on the information now made available, this guy planned the killings.  He wasn't even in the same building as the judge who was killed.  He knew where the judge was and sought him out.  The other victims were innocent bystanders.

The person who made the 911 call this morning was the female hostage he had.  She escaped and made the call.  Thankfully, the arrest was made peacefully.  People were cheering in the streets outside the apartment complex when Nichols was arrested.

This case will be interesting to follow.  The total screw up at the courthouse will have severe future effects.  I'm sure from now on there will be intense screening of prisoners going to trial.  And then the 30 hours this guy was on the run.  There's still a question of how he got from downtown to Buckhead and what happened there.

Unfortunately, Brian Nichols will be a name that will live on forever.

Yeah, I know. I think that there should be times when the Constitution can be bypassed. If everyone knows this guy shot 4 people (and 2 of them died, right?), I don't see the hold-up in putting him on death row and being done with it. Outside of the Constitution, I mean.

The guy "supposedly" shot four people and all died.  There is a question of the fifth victim who is still in the hospital.  She's the 51 year old deputy who was the initial guard for the Nichols.  They are not releasing information on her.  At first, it was reported she was shot in the mouth and now there's some reports that she was beaten.  Not sure what happened there.  She is expected to survive.

There's no relationship to the dead customs agent and Nichols.  Just the wrong place at the wrong time for that guy.  Same with the female hostage who called the cops.  It chills me to think that it could have been anyone.

Since Nichols is suspected in the custom agent's murder, he'll face federal charges.  So even if Georgia didn't have the death penalty, the US government does.

Cases where someone openly kills someone almost merit bypassing the legal system and just lynching them out back.  Almost...  Cases like this are the closest we have to a call for that.
