More $$$ to see Mets, Yankees, BoSox

I was checking out the Disney update for the Atlanta Braves spring training schedule and prices (the Braves have their spring training at Disney) and came across this little blurb:
Tickets for individual games go on sale at 10 a.m. on January 10 through Ticketmaster and at the Wide World of Sports box office. Prices start at $15 for general admission lawn seats and go up to $28 for lower-level reserved seating.
There is a $4 upcharge for games featuring the Mets, Yankees and Boston Red Sox.
I guess New York and Boston fans will do just about anything to see their teams.

It's not anything new. The Orioles started charging higher admissions for Yankees and Red Sox games this past year.

But no extra charge to see the Phillies who won the World Series last year? No extra charge to see any team with a popular star? No extra charge to see a division rival (OK, the Orioles have those are rivals)? I'm surprised no one has filed a class action suit crying discrimination.

No, no extra charge for the Phillies. Why? The Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, and Cubs are the big teams that people go to see. People are going to see those teams play regardless so why not charge more for those tickets when the people will pay it anyway? Not so much for the Phillies or any other team. They're not as popular, plain and simple.
