Stan Winston, the genius behind the creation of the Predator, the look of the xenomorphs in Aliens, and the creator of the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park died of cancer today at 62. I am saddened by this death as I am a visual effects nut and knew his work quite well.

I remember watching Jurassic Park and that scene when Sam Neill and Laura Dern turn and see their first dinosaur made my jaw drop.  And then the whole T2 morphing thing.  The guy made you say "how the hell did they do that?"

Don't forget him being the sensible one in the creation of the Predator. They originally wanted some long-necked dog faced creature with one eye. I watched both Predators and the two Alien vs. Predator movies recently and that design is just classic (although in the first AVP the Predator makeup without the mask didn't look too good).

Is Rick Baker more known for his actual "masks" or is he into all the generated things too?  He's the only one that even comes close in my mind to Stan Winston.

(And yes, your mother does know this kind of stuff.)

I think Rick Baker is more makeup than creature effects.
