He was 76. IMDb didn't say what he died of and I'm too lazy to look around for other articles right now.

Well, not a nice man... in reference to Tina Turner...

BUT He did play on what is considered the FIRST ROCK n ROLL RECORD EVER!!

He played with the Rocket 88s.  Someone accidentally punctured one of the speakers in his guitar amp, which created a distorted sound.  They decided to leave it because it sounded neat.  And thus what began as an accident is how everybody rocks out now (minus the hole, they just overdrive the hell out of em).
