Oh boy. I don't even know what to say. Well, she did get the year it started right. And she did know it started when someone was shot. I was surprised she didn't say it was when Lincoln was killed.
I shouldn't be that surprised, though. In a really, really, really, really, really, bad, bad, bad, bad, decision on our part, we had a mother and her ten year old girl live with us for four months and one week.
Rich asked the girl a question on something. She didn't know the answer to it. It was something simple that everyone really should know. The mother said the girl hadn't been taught that in school. Rich said that it was basically common knowledge. The mother said, and this is a direct quote, "If she doesn't learn it in school, then it's not important".
Where is the thirst for knowledge? I can tell you a big reason for it. How many of people on this board can name a hobby? Now, go down to the mall and ask every teenager that comes through the door what their hobby is. Excludiing playing video games, IMing, blogging and shopping.
I'm appalled. Just appalled.

When I want to know something, I look it up. There's been many times I'm just curious about something so my friend Wikipedia comes to help. Heck, sometimes when I'm bored I just read Wikipedia articles about the histories of different stores (like one time I went through the major fast food restaurants). Yes, I'm a geek.

yeah I'm tired of the "it's too hard.make it easier" kids its because they are getting too lazy because of those parents that believe in that philosophy,"i wont make my kids do this when i grow up". Also in my opinion the parents make the kids.Idiocy is a disease thats passed down from parent to child in most cases at least that i have seen.

Question on Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? last night.
Name two of the longest US rivers. The Mississippi is one of them. What's the other one?
Rich and I got it wrong. And it bugged us. We had to look it up today. Just because we wanted to see it for ourselves. My answer turned out to be half the length of the correct answer. Rich wasn't convinced of the correct answer. He'll need to see it on a map.
If I had a kid at home or near me (tell Marlie to watch out for the graduation weekend), that map would have come out and we have looked at it together. Just because you are told the right answer doesn't mean you shouldn't see WHY it's the right answer if you don't understand it.
The day I stop learning is the day they are turning on the controls to cremate me.
BTW - the correct answer is the Missouri River. I thought the Snake River, Rich thought the Rio Grande.

The Missouri River technically starts in Western Montana, though they may judge it as either North Dakota or Montana. It's a crazy long river.

We were confused on the starting and ending points of the Missouri. See what living next to the damn thing for 12 years gets you? Nothing but over-analyzation. But at least we could name two other fairly long US rivers.
