We apologize if we were not clear as to what occured back in December. From the reading the notes, we can see that on December 18th, the Abuse department interrupted your server due to an AUP Violation. Abuse claims that we received numberous complaints and SBL listings in reference to SPAM that was being sent from that server. If you feel that this was not something of your doing, please let us know and we can get you access to your server so you can wipe out any anomalies that may be causing this to happen.

The first AUP violation carries a penalty of $250. Thank you.

The last database backup was November 17th (at least a month before the server was shut down), and the last data backup was on May 22nd (so a lot of attachments for 2006 will be missing).  Not everything is lost, just the posts from November 17th on (and May 22nd on for attachments).

You mean how would you contribute money?  Paypal would probably be the easiest way.

The battle of the 3's (this isn't helping my decision much).

honestly this is just my opinion. but it would be nice to have a clean start on a forum. maybe get some people to write some tutorials\guides for each sub forum.. and make them stickys....

Well, there's that possibility too, and considering all of the issues with the login hashes, that might be the most realistic approach.  I could tie the global logins directly into the forums, too.  I don't know that that really gains us anything though (a fresh start, I mean).

I agree with UniBonger, I think a fresh start is needed and will be a good thing.  I hope we can just stay at this location, but that may not be a posibility.

I'm with Uni.

This is a great way to flush all of the crap that was in the forums.  I know we lost a lot of good info, but maybe the wayback machine can help.

I think it is a good idea as well.  There were a lot of threads that were useful on the old forums, but it seemed like there was about 3-4 threads of flaming for every useful thread.  Let's just get a fresh start here.  Hopefully with a new start, you can try to enforce stricter rules to keep flaming at a minimum.

A clean slate sounds good to me. Along with the tighter moderation.

Yeah a new start with the guides, and a spot with all the mod menus that are going around (the ones that won't be in build 17 I guess) would be good...

I do actually have a copy of the old forums up and running (minus that last month of posts).  You just can't log in.  The SMF team is working on a new version that fixes this, though.  I can (and plan to) add more moderators once the forums are fully functional, so starting over... I don't know, what does it get us?  It just means you'd have to reference a different forum any time you wanted to find some old information.  Two different forums, really.  This one and the old one.  I don't think people's behavior is going to magically change because a forum recently started out empty.

I'm sorry, I was under the understanding that a whole lot more than jsut one month was gone.

Then I suggest staying here until the login issue can be resolved then we relocate back to the old forums.

I've grown quiet fond of this forum and I'm quiet comfortable here...  Those moderating this forum do a fantastic job and our new friends are a great bunch of people.

I agree with Uni on the fresh start also...  Save the important things like tutorials, map stuff ect... but trash all the flaming crap.

Allowing flaming and ranting should simply be banished.  Anyone who flames should have their reply deleted and be warned to stop or be banned.

After all these years, allowing it has clearly served absolutely no purpose and just ruins everybody's good times on the forums.

Jitspoe, if you use this as a fresh start and start enforcing tighter rules, then I think it can change people's behavior.  It might not change it in DP or on IRC, but the forums are a start.

I just dont think you should have to pay 250$ for something thats not your fault. I also don't think many people would help pay and it wouldn't be right for you to do it all.

Agreed with KnackyPack, it certainly can't hurt to try and see how things go. A month's worth of posts isn't that bad at all.

I like the idea of starting clean, and giving a few certain people bans right off the bat

If you already have an archive of data for reference that is enough. You are already doubltess paying your own money to make this work int the first place. If we are going to pay it should be to allow for more development.

But then I am not one of the mappers, etc. and I think they stand to lose the most useful information.

Wait, some of you are acting like this is the new forum and others are talking about a completely new one apart from this one and the old one. Which is it?

This is the temporary shelter and whether a new forum is erected or the old is revived we've already been told we're welcome to remain a part of this one as well.

I was never in the old forum but i enjoy this one. I've had allot of good laughs. There are certain peoples posts wither i know them or not that just ten to make you angry. I for one don't think anyone else wants to read that unless you get entertainment out of someone else's flamingness.  But whatever theres a good side and a bide side to the question. Everything that the people want done to the new forum...what can't it be done to this one? Just a thought  Smiley
