I should make an official "I need a new computer/new hardware" thread

If you're doing a CPU/Board overhaul, you're looking at new memory and likely a video card anyway... at that point, it makes more sense to go with a whole machine.

Well...

WIth a new mobo you will need new memory as the old one is not compatible with anything post y2k.

I suggest getting a mobo/cpu combo with integrated graphics as some of the packages now are pretty good for being all in one.

I would not go with integrated graphics.  They make it impossible to upgrade later.

Not true.  When you can afford a new graphics card, you can disable the embedded card and the new graphics card with be your primary one. Typically the BIOS will detect an add on graphics card and automagically disable the integrated one.

Yeah, that's true of most cards these days.

Yeah, my brother's computer has both onboard and either PCI or AGP video. When we put it in, we couldn't figure out why it wasn't working but we eventually discovered that it was defaulting to the onboard. I think once that was disabled for good, it's worked with no problems for like 3 years.

the 945 chipset is a good one, but I might look at something other than a biostar mobo.  I don't know why they dont have a gig ethernet port...

That's all well and good if you have a slot to plug the video card into.  Many boards with onboard graphics use the AGP slot, so if you go and get an AGP video card later on, you have nowhere to plug it in.  I'm not sure how it works with pci-e, but I imagine it's the same thing.  It's cheaper to make that way.
