Well this oughta make a few people happy.

My PC finally kicked the bucket and it will be some time before I can afford to build a new one.

I'm reduced to my kid's primative system which will barely run Solitare.

Anyway, I hope to be able to play again sometime but I Have no idea when.

Not sure what the heck went wrong but the burning smell was a dead giveaway.

I'll be around Smiley

That's no good.  Perhaps it was something like the power supply which would be relatively inexpensive to replace.

If it weren't for Jim Beam, you'd probably be able to afford a new machine. Tongue

One time I fried a speaker wire. But that was on an old machine with a 2" speaker inside. Still not sure why that happened.

Picasso, did you smell that smell and then your PC just quit?
If so, then chances are it was your power supply.
You can replace that fairly cheap.

I was playing a BF2 Special Forces night map, just about to start a TWL match and I started smelling that smell. Minutes later, POOF, my PC went dead. Was the power supply.

Hahaha good lord!!!  Okay I have one of my techy brothers coming tonight with a 400w power supply.   I know that it is the main problem so hopefully that's all that is wrong with it.

I forgot ground my computer once. I touched the case and it felt funny. Kinda like the 9 volt battery to your tongue, just less noticeable.

Of course it runs Solitare...  That's just my way of saying that this PC is a prehistoric hunk of shit probably 9 years old.

Also, it has been confirmed and much worse than I had hoped...  Total system melt down and my PC is toast.  Physical burns where the power supply connects to the mobo so the mobo and the old power supply are fried and I'm not sure how many hardware components are destroyed...

Pretty sure I lost my HDs but my brother is taking them home to test on his system because we have hopes that this PC is simply too old to know how to detect the newer HDs.

Personally I think I lost my HDs and sadly I didn't have anything backed up.  What sucks is that I had just got a portable HD and was about to backup a buncha stuff LOL

FTW

*Edit. Oops how rude of me. Leaving after laughing. Let me know if you can not get it running. Shipping should not be more than $70. I still have about 4 full machines that should have been rebuilt. It would be token of my friendship. Btw Powersupply? Oh yeah 'Bang my Dong!' Oh god no, not the 80's.

LOL FYI I final realized 'You can't report your own post to the moderator, that doesn't make sense!' Does make sense. (Admin directly below here is a pic. Where is it, I show it embedded)

Preparing to do a backup is almost a surefire way to end up with a data loss catastrophe.

In the future, though, I'd suggest investing money in a quality power supply like a seasonic.  It may cost more upfront, but it's worth it to not have to replace all of your components when that cheap power supply asplodes.

Okay good news...  My HDs survived the wrath of the power supply gone bad.  Unfortunately the mobo is still fried and I'm haveing a hell of a time finding one compatible with mine:

http://www.hardinfo.dk/show.asp?page=1936

The CPU is an AMD Athlon Xp 2000 (Slot A)

I want to stick with a 400mhz FSB - VIA chipset, and I need the board to support DDR PC2700 memory.

I've seen some that come close on EBAY but just haven't lucked into what I'm looking for.

Thanks for any help Smiley

I think my old board, an Abit KG7-RAID should work... I'm running an Athlon XP 2600+ and a gig of DDR in it (I think it'll take 2700, but I don't know what I have in it, surprisingly... I think I have one 2700, one 2100 so it's bleh).  Gives you the option of RAID or if you can find a plain KG7 or KG7-Lite, you've got some options.  I've seen a few floating around on ebay, only one at the moment seems to be English, but it's going for a mere 5 pounds.

pfft, nm, missed the VIA 400 MHz note... bleh

Well, that one was very close...  Snipen found one with a VIA KT600 chipset which looks like it should do the trick:  http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?

Hopefully this one will work because he already bought it for me and it's being shipped to my addy.

Cross your fingers that I get that system back up and running.

Thanks for lookin Smiley
