ok, this just started happening. Sometimes, when i go to start game, load up a map and stuff, paintball crashes when it gets to loading pics. it works on join game, just not start game. any ideas?

Is there a specific file it's crashing on? Quake2's file loading doesn't gracefully handle corrupt files.

Actually it just crashes randomly. This is what my screen looks like each time:
it always is when it gets to loading pics.

Wait wait wait i didn't modify any pics. The only thing i put in there was those custom crosshairs by spydie and those huds someone posted earlier. Other than that i'm pretty sure the files are all original.
Let me tell you something else. Every time, i can always tell if it's about to crash because everything else loads really slow and it stops at pics. Oh yeah, just remembered i downloaded some high res textures from somewhere on this forum. Could that have something to do with it? But those aren't in the pics folder...
edit: i deleted my old pics folder and replaced it with a "stock" one. (I redownloaded paintball)
Let's see if it works...

Sounds like a bad image file somewhere. Let me know if it still crashes with stock images.
