Just thought I'd start a music suggestion thread, since everyone here seems to know each other's tastes pretty well, and some of us might know of bands that those people might like even more...
For example, if you like Evanescence, you might like Lacuna Coil quite a bit. I've seen them live, and they are quite good...also very friendly toward their fans. However, if you compare them to Evanescence to their faces, they get pissed off, since they've been around a lot longer.
Anyhow, give something like "Heaven's A Lie" or "Daylight Dancer" a try. They're a little bit harder than Evanescence (think "Bring Me To Life") and their male lead singer has a voice that takes some time to get used to, but if you get into it, you're hooked.
I also don't know if anyone here is into world music, but Cheb Mami's music can get right under your skin really quickly. He's incredible...Algerian rai music is definitely an acquired taste as well.

I have Comalies (one of their albums, most recent, I think). Have Chris bug me about it tomorrow.

Lacuna Coil is good stuff, fo sho. Nightwish is kind of along the same lines, though Lacuna Coil hails from Italy, and Nightwish is from somewhere in Scandinavia.
If you like Sevendust, you might like Stereomud. THough they have broken up, their two albums are killer. It featured former members of Stuck Mojo (Clint from sevendust's bro played bass in both bands) and Life of Agony (Joey Z is an amazing guitar player, though LOA shows his skills more than Stereomud did). Stereomud just did a good job of having grooves, and using melodic/hard vocals. The second album deserved so much more exposure than it got.
If you like NY hardcore, youll like LOA, If you like Alice in Chains youll like LOA. If you enjoy a good rock album, youll like LOA. These guys from NYC redefined themselves on every album theyve put out. And its ALL been good as far as im concerned. They broke up a few years ago, and got together for a reunion concert. As a result of that, they are now in the studio working on a new album for the first time in almost 10 years. I am stoked to see how it turns out.

The weird thing about Nightwish is I absolutely can't stand them. They're one step above Grim Reaper in my book.
Stereomud were pretty good - I remember hearing "Pain" when I worked at Best Buy, and for a while I thought they were playing a new single by Sevendust. It's tough to hear things really clearly in there, I guess. "Perfect Self" is a really good song too. Depressing, but good.
Also, if you like Sevendust, you might like a band out of Florida called Skrape. Very different vocals, but Billy Keeton can hit some notes that send shivers up your spine, and he has no problem switching between melody and a growling scream (you'll understand when you hear it). "Habit" and "In the End" off the "Up The Dose" CD are easily the best tracks available, with a very close runner-up in "Isolated" off the "New Killer America" CD.

Skrape was a little too hardcore for me. Not enough melody popping out.
If you like Pantera and Iron Maiden, you might like Killswitch Engage. Imagine dual-lead rhythm guitars, okay mainly just rhythm, but as tough as most leads, combined with a nice switch between hard and clean vocals. Like Sevendust, their singer is a black man who has a soulful croon when he does clean vox. Unlike Sevendust, they are full on most of the time, in more of an old school metal way. They are a nice combination of the good parts of old school thrash (very intricate speedy parts) and numetal (downtuned guitars and some grooves) but remain eternally optimistic (something not found often in metal). THe songs kick with full force, and punch you back in your seat. KSE!

if you like pop punk, 80s rock, and hardcore, you might like Atreyu. They have serious chops. Their two singers are phenomenonal. their main singer is a screamer, and the drummer does all the melodic stuff. The guitarists do a good job of nailing down all the good points of the above mentioned genres. One guitarist chugs away with the heavy and hard punk rhythms while the other is constantly weaving in a higher end background harmony. THey play dual leads once in a while, but they just rock! i saw them live playing with lamb of god, and i came away a much bigger Atreyu fan than lamb of god. They just have good hooks to keep you listening through the heavy vocals. If you can find a copy of THE CURSE, their newest album, give it a spin. if not and you want to hear it, ive got it.

Someone once told me that if I liked Bryan White I'd like Barry Manilow.

Oh no...I'm sorry, but yes. I like Barry Manilow. In my defense I like almost all types of music. I could listen to Barry for awhile and then switch off to Metallica and then turn Alabama on and then maybe some Patsy Cline and finally some Linkin Park. Yeah, I'm weird that way.

LOL. If it makes you feel better I don't have any Manilow music anymore. I had records(yes...I still have some) from when he was really popular. They were my mom's. And if he comes on American Idol I listen. That's about it. I haven't run out to buy CD's or anything.

I admit to being only a partial Queen fan, BUT the fact that i chose some of their vinyl over some other bands should say something.

They had some huge hits and were definitely a defining group in the 70's and 80's, so I think it says you recognize significant music when you hear it

If you like Manilow...you might like Richard Cheese. He takes rock, pop, rap, any hit song he can find, and turns it into lounge music. Absolutely hilarious.
Check out his covers of Mystikal's "Shake Ya Ass" or Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" - funniest shit ever.

Also, I just thought of this one - if you like REM or U2, you might like Manic Street Preachers. Nicky Wire is a complete nutbag, so their lyrics can occasionally be interpreted as either cryptic trash or brilliant obscurity, depending on the level of pretense you wish to project, but the music is fantastic. "If You Tolerate This, Then Your Children Will Be Next" is a major suggestion, as is "Mausoleum."

Richard Cheese is hilarious. I think I've got most, if not all, of the songs on Lounge Against the Machine. Very funny stuff.
I'll have to check out Manic Street Preachers. Never heard of them, but I love U2.

If you like U2 and VAST, you'll enjoy Ours. good stuff.
Aight, if you enjoy ol' skool metallica and new school metal (thrashy) you will love TRIVIUM! these guys positively kick ass. Their singer/guitarist is a whopping 18 years old (just graduated), and has been with the band since he was 13. He can scream/sing quite well for his youth, and can play his ass off!
Also if you enjoy metallica and skynyrd or southern rock or hardcore punk, check out an album by Corrosion of Conformity. Hailing from North Carolina, These guys musical career has transcended all the boundaries of punk, southern rock, and metal. Every album is awesome in its own right, and they had a new one just hit the shelves.
If you enjoy Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, and southern rock, check out Seemless. They formed from the old KSE singer, the old Shadows Fall drummer and a couple other dudes from the Massachussetts hardcore scene. Oddly enough, they have more in common with southern rock and bluesbased metal than their Mass. bretheren. Its very groove oriented, lots of bluesy solos, and the singer really SINGS almost the entire time (KSE was almost all screaming, so a big change). Damn good stuff.

More groovy, blues rock? Seemless, you say? If it's anything like BLS Hangover Music Vol. 6 or Clutch, I'd probably be interested in that. I'll have to try to check that out.
