« on: Jan 23, 2007, 08:32 AM »

Same as usual, what's going to win is highlighted in bold and what I want to win is italicized. And the update... the winners are underlined and in a bigger font

Best Motion Picture
Babel
The Departed
Letters From Iwo Jima
Little Miss Sunshine
The Queen

The one everybody wanted to win won

Best Leading Actor
Leonardo diCaprio (Blood Diamond)
Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson)
Peter O'Toole (Venus)
Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness)
Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland)

Whitaker was the forerunner. And I forgot to go back and change my guess for this category

Best Leading Actress
Penélope Cruz (Volver)
Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal)
Helen Mirren (The Queen)
Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada)
Kate Winslet (Little Children)

Duh

Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine)
Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children)
Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond)
Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls)
Mark Wahlberg (The Departed)
I was surprised to see Mark Wahlberg in this category over his cast mate Jack Nicholson.

This is one of the many upsets this year, a lot of people were thinking Murphy was going to win

Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Adriana Barraza (Babel)
Cate Blanchett (Notes on a Scandal)
Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine)
Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls)
Rinko Kikuchi (Babel)

Duh

Best Director
Clint Eastwood (Letters From Iwo Jima)
Stephen Frears (The Queen)
Paul Greengrass (United 93)
Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel)
Martin Scorsese (The Departed)
So I guess Hollywood is ready for 9/11 movies if Greengrass was nominated

ABOUT FREAKING TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best Writing, Directly for the Screen
Babel
Letters From Iwo Jima
Little Miss Sunshine
Pan's Labyrinth
The Queen

Little Miss Sunshine was a little miss upsetter for a few categories this year

Best Writing, Adapted
Borat
Children of Men
The Departed
Little Children
Notes on a Scandal
Heh, Borat was nominated. Is it in the Adapted category because Borat was based on a TV show character or is it because it was adapted from people's actions in the movie?

I'm sad my Children of Men didn't win anything Sad But figured Departed won

Best Cinematography
The Black Dahlia
Children of Men
The Illusionist
Pan's Labyrinth
The Prestige
Good lord, I love Children of Men's cinematography

Children of Men had AWESOME cinematography Sad

Best Editing
Babel
Blood Diamond
Children of Men
The Departed
United 93
Children of Men is my favorite movie right now...

I don't think The Departed should have won this. United 93 and Children of Men had much more complicated editing than a movie that was shot as an action/thriller

Best Art Direction
Dreamgirls
The Good Shepherd
Pan's Labyrinth
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
The Prestige
I don't think Pan's Labyrinth's style can really be topped this year

Duh

Best Costume Design
Curse of the Golden Flower
The Devil Wears Prada
Dreamgirls
Marie Antoinette
The Queen
They wore a lot of costumes in Dreamgirls

Makes sense Marie Antoinette won. The Academy love the old period costumes

Best Original Score
Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel)
Thomas Newman (The Good German)
Philip Glass (Notes on a Scandal)
Javier Navarrete (Pan's Labryrinth)
Alexandre Desplat (The Queen)
I can't personally chose one because I have seen none of those movies and barely know who any of the composers are

This one was anybody's win anyway

Best Original Song
"I Need to Wake Up" (An Inconvenient Truth)
"Listen" (Dreamgirls)
"Love You I Do" (Dreamgirls)
"Our Town" (Cars)
"Patience" (Dreamgirls)
Getting some Dreamgirls love on here. Geez. I liked the song Patience from the movie but I know the Jennifer Hudson soloed "Love You I Do" will probably win. Actually surprised to see Prince is not on this list

UPSET! I think being nominated for three songs split the vote for Dreamgirls

Best Makeup
Apocalypto
Click
Pan's Labyrinth

Duh

Best Sound
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Dreamgirls
Flags of Our Fathers
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Epic war movies always make for the best sounding movies. Yes, I picked it over Pirates

I guess they had to give Dreamgirls something other than Supporting Actress

Best Sound Editing
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Flags of Our Fathers
Letters from Iwo Jima
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Again, sound is key in epic war movies

Like I said, it's a war movie

Best Visual Effects
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Poseidon
Superman Returns
Nothing can beat Davy Jones. Nothing

Duh

Best Animated Film
Cars
Happy Feet
Monster House
I actually liked Happy Feet more than Cars but Cars is Pixar and Pixar means instant Oscar

Woo hoo! They avoided the Pixar trap and gave the win to the film I liked better

Best Foreign Language Film
After the Wedding (Denmark)
Days of Glory (Algeria)
Pan's Labyrinth (Mexico)
The Lives of Others (Germany)
Water (Canada)
With all the praise Pan's Labyrinth is getting, it's a shoe-in

Who the heck didn't vote for Pan's Labyrinth?

Best Documentary, Feature
Deliver Us from Evil
An Inconvenient Truth
Iraq in Fragments
Jesus Camp
My Country My Country
Al Gore will win for real this time... until the makers of Iraq in Fragments demand a recount and the electoral votes are more than the popular...

Usually when a documentary gets that much publicity, it wins. See: March of the Penguins, Farenheit 9/11

Best Documentary, Short Subject
The Blood of Yingzhou District
Recycled Life
Rehearsing a Dream
Two Hands
Can't chose, don't care

Best Short Film, Animated
The Danish Poet
Lifted
The Little Matchgirl
Maestro
No Time for Nuts
Don't care

After I found out The Little Matchgirl was the annual Disney entry, I was going for that... but it didn't win

Best Short Film, Live Action
Binta and the Great Idea
Éramos Poco
Helmer & Son
The Saviour
West Bank Story
Again, don't care

I'm just going to comment on "the big ones".

Best Picture - with Dreamgirls not nominated, this category gets blown out of the water.  Maybe they did that to keep the audience since it's the last award of the night.  I'd love to see either The Departed or a total upset of Little Miss Sunshine.

Actor - it'll be Forest Whitaker.  Kind of strange to also see him on TV in ER right now.  If Whitaker doesn't win, Peter O'Toole will.  Nice to see DiCaprio and Will Smith on the list.

Actress - Helen Mirren will win.  I don't like seeing Meryl Streep on this list.  Good performance but not THAT great.  And the movie was so damn predictable we all almost fell asleep.  I'd love to finally see Kate Winslet get something.  I don't think she really ever disappoints.

Supporting Actor - Eddie Murphy will walk away with this one.  Very nice to see Mark Wahlberg on the list.  He doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell but he can do other things than act next to Clooney.

Supporting Actress - why did they even nominate the other four?  Jennifer Hudson has had this wrapped up for months.

Director - Scorsese finally.  And even though I'm not sure I can actually watch the film yet, Greengrass was a nice surprise.

Except for Best Picture, the other categories are pretty much sewn up.  I'll watch the awards to see if there are any upsets.

It seems like I know less and less about  movies as the years pass.

I think you're getting Wahlberg confused with Matt Damon

I was thinking Three Kings and The Perfect Storm.  Matt Damon doesn't have to prove a damn thing ever since Good Will Hunting.

I haven't even heard of most of those, let alone seen them.  Wasn't Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on the last nomination thread you had?

Oh, yeah, forgot about those two movies. Mark Wahlberg has done a considerable number of movies since those two so it's not exactly fair to say he needs George Clooney. In fact, Matt Damon has been in more movies with Clooney than Wahlberg has.

Actually, we kind of stopped at the end of the 80s because my teacher said nothing truly significant happened in the 90s outside of the grundge bands so we never really got to mentioning Metallica.

Even though Metallica was far more influential in the 80s than the 90s?

And this is really OT but I've listened to Metallica's "Whiskey in the Jar" and it doesn't hold a candle to the Off Kilter version of it.  You haven't lived until you've heard that song with bagpipes.

Metallica's version was actually a nod to Thin Lizzy's version, which of course came from the traditional song.

So does Off Kilter.  They are a Celtic rock band.  But they do other songs.  Imagine Johnny B. Good with bagpipes.  The Summer of '69.  Run, Run, Run, Away.

Their traditional stuff is also excellent.  Danny Boy, Amazing Grace, Merry Mac.

Just ask Demon Child.  It's one of her favorite things to do at Disney World.  "What do you what to do first?"  "OFF KILTER!!!'

And the Oscars are over. A few upsets and Scorsese finally gets his frakkin gorram Oscar.

My Oscar thoughts -

Ellen DeGeneras should be asked back as a host.  Having Steven Speilberg take her picture with Clint Eastwood was too funny.  And giving the script to Scorsese was pretty funny.

Philobolus (the troupe that formed all those images behind the screen) was outstanding.  Gotta see them if they ever come to Atlanta.  The Snakes on a Plane thing was unbelieveable.  Notice how the plane bulged a bit after they did the snake thing?

I absolutley loved the upset of Alan Arkin in Best Supporting Actor for Little Miss Sunshine.  I have been an Alan Arkin fan ever since Freebie and the Bean (everyone reading this is now searching IMDb).  Rich had to tell me to calm down.

The Departed was a good film (we saw it on Saturday).  But Little Miss Sunshine was a better one.  There was a part of The Departed where I just wanted them to get it the hell over with.

My biggest gripe of Oscar 2007.  That it just went green.  The message Al Gore and Leo put out was great and it was seen by 1 billion people around the world.  That's great.  I honestly was yelling at the screen, though.  I've been "green" for 17 years!  One time, Rich came home with a roll of paper towels (which get used very rarely in our house) that were patterned.  Chris and I ripped him a new one because he didn't get plain white.  I bought a pack of 200 paper napkins at the dollar store shortly after we moved here six years ago.  I have propably 150 left.  It's a great message that got out but the Academy acted like they were so great for doing it now.  Should have done it a long time ago.  Off my environmental soapbox now.

And I'm left wondering how Kate Winslet hasn't won an Oscar yet.  She's too young for the voters to feel sympathy for her.

I agree with Ellen returning. She was great. I also believe Kate Winslet is going to be the next Meryl Streep nominations-wise and the next Scorsese not-winning-wise.

One thing I mentioned to Vengeance as the "Three Amigos" walked off the stage with Scorsese: "Do you realize how much all four of those men are worth?"
