I have been looking around for a game that our kids at school could play, and I think this one is great, FPS without the blood Wink I just have a few questions which I couldn't find on the forums or website.

Is it possible to disable chat completely?

I was thinking of ways of deploying the game as well and wondered if anyone had some views they could add?

Building an msi that will deploy the game files to the machine through Group Polices or whether it was possible to just have one network share they can all run the game from. Basically I need to make it so they can only get to the game when I allow them!

Many thanks for your input

Ben

What you could do is when you allow them to play is to enable sharing on the paintball folder and just disable when you are done, only thing about that is you also would share the config files meaning that if they change their name it would do it to the people who open paintball after that.

Ben,

To answer your question, yes, you could build an msi installer and customize the config.cfg that gets distributed so that messages would not show up.  The downside is, the config.cfg file has to be RW and that being the player/student would be able to activate the messages.

yes, in the commands.txt file put in:
Code:
messagemode   100
messagemode2  100
say           100
thus only letting the server admin talk. wait... but that wouldnt to diddlie squat if they run a server of their own... sortof.

I forgot about that Z. That way would work too. probably better as it would be a perm fix.

I think that you still can talk over console, even though these settings are set. That was the problem we had with PBCup, so jitpsoe made a special build that disabled ALL sorts of communication.

well yea, the owner of the sever will be able to communicate, and anyone that person wants as well, but that would be a hassle to do.

By "talking over console" I mean bringing down the console ingame (~) and then entering a text.

Thanks for your replies so far, i will do the changes to the config files, also it looks like i can un bind the key mapping to functions so hopefully they wont be able to open the console at all.

i think i will share the directory and they i can set only read rights to the config directory, they will all be called newbie i guess  Grin, will this have any effect to the game loading and playing

i will have a play...... i mean work at work tomorrow

thanks

forgot about that. but yea, i guess you could unbind the "~" key.

i dont think it will have any effect while loading and playing, however pball might flip out when it tries to write to the config file and gets an "access denied" message. but i havnt tried, and i cant find out 'cuz vista doesnt come with opengl, or at least the right version to run pball. stupid micor$oft.

Are you talking about disabling chat from the server side or the client side?  In other words, do you want to make it so they can't send chat messages or can't see chat messages?

Having a read-only config file should work OK.  It just won't save any of the changed settings.  I'm not sure if you can disable the ~ key or not.  I think that might be hardcoded (so you don't accidentally screw yourself over with no way to fix it).

Could you use -console 0 as a parameter or something like using GldSrc you have to use -console 1 as an option to allow the console.
