This is from Yahoo - http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&ncid=519&e=2&u=/ap/20050129/ap_on_re_us/winter_weatherIt just torks me. These writers just aren't in this area. Yeah, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport only has one runway open. That's because the airlines started cancelling flights as early as Thursday evening. The lousy AJC newspaper here even said the reason there's no air traffic is due to the early canellation of flights. There aren't that many stranded travelers in the area. The worst were the people trying to get through here early this morning. The overpasses and bridges on the interstates froze and there's no equipment to handle it. And 52,000 people without power? According to our latest reports, it's more like 4,000 and things are back to normal now. We had one slight brownout (had to reboot my 'puter) and that's been it. And we're in North Georgia where they are dooming and glooming us. The media coverage of this is so bad we had both sets of parents contact us to see if we were OK. Jeez. It's just an freaking ice storm and it isn't even that bad. I guess it was a slow news day.

Agreed. It's not really that bad, even here in Columbia. From what I've seen, the storm is moving slightly northeast so I think we're just going to get the bottom edge of it here. They got a good bit more up in Clemson, though. http://www.johncu71.com/IMG_0123.JPGPic taken by John (not me, the John registered here on the forums) earlier this morning. We're not getting even a quarter of that here, but we did get enough to cancel our dinner plans with my grandparents and aunt and uncle tonight This part of the country just isn't equipped to handle even a little bit of ice. Anyone from Nebraska remember that ice storm we had in early 2000, I think it was? I mentioned that storm at dinner last night and how it took me almost 2 hours to drive to school. I think I've mentioned that to Rolando before. Anyway, my parents didn't even remember that storm and I seem to recall it being one of the worst days for winter weather traffic.

To add to this - RichN just went out for a grocery run and to check on the roads. We're staying in for tonight. Not because it's bad but because nothing is really that open. Even Kroger has a skelton staff. Subway is closed.
And yes, Supermercado, I unfortunately DO remember that freaking ice storm of 2000. I'd use a stronger word but.... That was the ice storm of January 17, 2000. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I stepped outside to warm up my car and the next thing I knew I was inside with RichN telling me my shoulder didn't look right. I broke the damn thing pretty nicely. Had a steel rod in my shoulder for almost six weeks but the whole thing became infected and I had four surgeries in one week to clean the thing out.
The good news - I'm 99% now with the right shoulder. The surgeon did wonders. PT helped tremendously. Thank goodness for medical insurance - the total hospital bill for all five operations was over $30K. I think we paid $500.
Thanks supermercado for the memories. Although the sight of elmono coming to the hospital room on his own was kinda nice.

Yeesh, that sounds pretty bad. I don't remember that happening. And here I was thinking Chris told me everything, haha.
Was in on MLK 2000? I guess Bellevue Public Schools didn't give that day off then. I don't know if they do now or not. I'm into the habit of everything in SC shutting down for the day. Clemson was never open on MLK and none of the public schools in Columbia are, either. Mid-January does sound right for when that ice storm was, though...

Yeah, I drove to Auburn from Clemson and went straight through downtown Atlanta last night. When I got to Auburn, my car was a shell of ice (including a full inch on my antenna). But ya know what? The roads were plenty warm then, so there was no ice anywhere. Even driving at 2 AM last night, I didn't find ice anywhere down here.
Agreed, the areas don't have the money or the justification to have the fleet of snow plows and salt/sand trucks we have back home, but still, it's so much more than just that. A warm road with a good bit of traffic isn't going to freeze.
The biggest problem I see is the dillweeds out driving who have no idea wtf they're doing. OH LOOKIES, MY WHEELS AREN'T GRIPPING... LET ME HIT THE GAS SOME MORE, MAYBE THAT WILL HELP... OH NO, I'M SLIDING MORE.
... ... ...NO SHIT SHERLOCK! If people would both be instructed on how to drive in foul weather (which means DON'T unless you have to go somewhere) and take the time to think, I don't think there would be half the problems there are. People here can't drive in rain, let alone snow or actual ice.
And for the record, it was 21 in Auburn last night and 7 in NJ (it was -3 two days ago, about 20 below with wind chill).

Right. People just don't know how to drive in bad conditions. Actually, I'm more of the persuasion that people can't drive no matter the conditions. Anybody with any bit of brains in their head should be able to figure out that if the tires aren't gripping the road, giving it more gas isn't going to help. That just makes great sense, after all. Let's see... spinning object, not getting traction, let's make it spin faster! Surely that will help.

We didn't have school that day my mom broke her collar bone. I remember because I was sleeping in and when I woke up, I asked my parents why they were still home. I was totally clueless my mom fell. In fact, they had already been to the hospital and back by the time I woke up

Well, it's Nebraska. I think it has at least one ice storm per year

That's true. I suppose it could have been another storm that year. I'm pretty sure it was early 2000. May have been late 1999. It was whenever the English 12AP class was reading King Lear, I'm pretty sure. I know that's a crazy detail to remember, but I remember finally getting to school and seeing Rolando, Joe, and a couple other people sitting in study hall reading it. Maybe Rolando can provide a little more detail.

That's right - you slept through the whole damn thing. If it wasn't for the cat, I might still be laying out there. RichN was home but didn't even make the connection that I didn't return to the house. Todd just started loudly meowing until RichN got interested enough to see what was going on. And Nebraska schools were closed on MLK, Jr. day. They just called it a teacher's holiday, I believe.

Example of the overreaction over the ice: Chandra's grandmother called awhile ago to see if my parents were okay with the ice storm...

Oh - that's very sweet of Grandma to be concerned about us. Tell her we stayed inside for most of the day. And now everything is melting. RichN made it to racquetball this morning. We'll be back to normal by tomorrow.

Disnut forgot to mention something from my trip to the grocery store. Now, keep in mind that this storm was due to last for just one day, and then all melt away today (Sunday), which it is. These freaks were buying firewood, for cripes sake! And for those who notice that people these days can't drive in snow, or even rain, I think Georgia drivers are even challenged when it's daytime or nighttime. Just a bunch of idiots here on the roads.

To that I add the tards going 60 mph in the heavy fog tonight (I was doing 30) that go 30 in light rain when you can go 60. GG

I'm really tempted to make a subdomain called rant.planetsuper.com and just post all my rants in it. There's so many things that just drive me totally nuts. Get this... I yielded to a person (as I was supposed to do), she hesitated as if waiting for me to go, and then finally went. She waved at me to thank me as she drove by. I was like "Don't wave. You don't have to thank me for driving correctly. Drive, since you're obviously having difficulty with it." For serious, though... I could go on all night about the inadequacies of the average driver in Columbia.

I thought your front page was your rant page. Heck, the rants could be added to the rant thread I made awhile ago

Have I turned my front page into a rant page? I meant for it to be more of a... commentary. And yes, I suppse it probably would be easier to simply post in the rant thread than writing an entirely new page for my rantings.
