What would be the best RAM to get a 13 year old for his birthday at a reasonable price?

This is for my mom. Smiley

First of all, try a site like Newegg. That's where I usually get my computer stuff. They're cheap and deliver quick. But I can't think of any brands off the top of my head unless you're talking about the amount of RAM

So you need a hard drive and not RAM? I have a Seagate right now and it works perfectly fine.

Steer clear of the WD Caviars.  Drew and I have had at least 4 of those drives fail between the two of us.  Granted, they were refurbs from woot.com, but still...  hard drives aren't something you want to go cheap on.  Other components can be replaced.  Data can't (unless you're good about backing up).

also i havent really had any problems with OEM stuff personally but it might be better to get retail in the case of a hard drive since i would rather have the warranty.

Are talking about RAM now? In my last system, I had Corsair XMS which was fine and in my new one, I've got OCZ, which is also fine.

I have a Seagate in my current gaming box and it seems to be okay. I've had pretty decent results from Western Digital in the past save for the great crash of '03 that Jitspoe will remember, no doubt. The main reason I went with Seagate this time around was because of the 5-year warranty. I got a 160GB drive for like $80 maybe? It's not SATA or perpendicular recording or whatever it is they're doing now but it's worked for me.

Whatever route you go, though, just remember that the most important thing is to back your stuff up if you can't afford to lose it. It's not a matter of if a hard drive will fail, it's a matter of when.

I just looked through Newegg very briefly and you should definitely be able to get a 100+ gig Seagate for under $100.

Well, what exactly is reasonable? A lot of the drives I saw were between $50 and $75 which is probably about as cheap as it's going to get.

Critical:
- Motherboard
- Power supply
- CPU
- Video card
- Memory
- Hard drive
- DVD burner

Not as critical:
- Good sound card (most motherboards have an OK sound card built in).

In short, the difference between memory and a hard drive is this: there's less memory but it's a lot faster. It's used by the processor to store things that it needs quick access to. It's also flushed when the machine is powered off. I'm sure Picasso's links tell you all that but that's the basics. It's also a lot more expensive. I got a 160GB hard drive for like $80 maybe but my 2GB of RAM cost me $200.
