So far, I've been impressed with its ease of use. I haven't really gotten past installing it, though, since I did it during my lunch break, but I got it up and running pretty quickly. The installer is probably the most user friendly OS installer I've seen. The only gripe I've had with it so far is that it defaulted to the highest resolution (and lowest refresh rate) my monitor could do. Something even higher than 1600x1200. I don't remember exactly what it was. When I went to a more sane resolution, it wouldn't let me go above 85Hz, either. I've come to prefer 100Hz if possible.
It's updating now. I might have more time to play around with it tonight.

I'm in the process of setting mine up right now, too. I have a feeling I just blew away my Windows install when I started the Ubuntu install.
And yes, I agree, the Ubuntu installer is very friendly. I like the live CD thing that Linux distros do, too. You can basically see the whole OS before you even install anything. It's pretty sweet.

Live cd's are great, especialy those that read NTFS partitions. I'vehad to recover several fiels fro ma few machiens that would not start winblows by using a live cd and a usb flash drive.

Well, Ubuntu installed properly this time, it appears. And I did see my Windows install on the OS selection screen. Posting this from Ubuntu, in fact. Time to go see if I really did blow away that Windows install.
Edit: Sweetness. It worked. Now, to see if either OS freezes up. I hope/think it was the CD-RW that I took out before I went home for Christmas. I was able to get through both installs without it locking so that at least is a good sign.

There are Windows LiveCD's, too. They're just a little harder to come by.

Marcus (used to be my neighbor) does IT, so he finds all kinds of crazy stuff like that. I remember he had this one CD that had like all kinds of windows versions in one: XP Home, XP Pro, Media Center Edition, etc., and it had a little boot menu where you could select which one you wanted.

Oooo. Sounds fun. Although I'd use it once to play with it and then never again, hehe.

Once I'm logged in, the resolution is what I set it to, but when it first comes up, it's at that crazy high resolution with the crazy low refresh rate. I can't figure out where to change that. I can change the theme and all that good stuff, but not the resolution.
I tried running paintball2 for kicks. It runs, but very slowly. I'm assuming it must be using some hardware acceleration, but I didn't install the ATI drivers. Paintball runs at about 30-50fps, though, in 640x480.
Now I'm doing some experimenting with the boot loader. I'm tyring to load a boot loader from another drive with the existing bootloader. Grub is on hd0, and I want to boot the bootloader from hd1. I can't seem to get it to work, though. I don't think I'm using the right commands.

Ubuntu no longer boots. I have no idea why. I didn't change anything on that machine that I recall. It just sits at the first pixel of the progress bar and does nothing. If I hit Alt+F1 to show the text, it just says, "Starting up..."
