Hello Paintballers, I've been using Paintball 2 as a metaphorical guinea pig so that I can write an article series about online shooters. The third part of the series was released yesterday and it's been going at a fairly steady rate so if you are interested I could do with the traffic for my website. The Link is below. Comments and Criticism would be much appreciated.

Although Paintball2 was created using the Q2 engine, and the original game WAS a Quake 2 mod, you are incorrect in calling it a Quake 2 mod on your website as Paintball2 is a complete standalone game.

Yeah, you use "noobed" way too often.  What does that mean, anyway?  That you got shot?

I did find this quote funny:
Quote
With bots you get an exact level of stupidity. With humans you get a random level of stupidity that goes up and down throughout the match.

And paintball2 does have bots, but... they suck.

Also, I would hardly call 5 second respawn times "brilliant".  "Incredibly annoying" might be a more accurate term.  It makes it nearly impossible to win a round, and half the time some people just end up spraying the spawn points and using other cheap tactics to get a bunch of  kills.  Not to mention the issues you described.

I stand corrected. Apologies to all offended Cheesy.

I cut down on the phrase noobed in the second article, but since it is a phrase used so often in the game I thought it was appropriate to mimic in the article.

Also the message is that five second respawn can be brilliant fun, but is often made rubbish by tiny maps and an excess of players. Kingdom in the Cliffs on five second respawn is great fun.

i think that was the worst description of this game i have ever heard. and on OTB speed server the only 2 maps that play are kingdom in the cliffs and ub_cliff if it is truely your favorite server you would know this its not that they voted for the map. and you wont find any of the better, older players rather, rushing to that server to play a 5 sec elimination game expecially with a close to 200 ping and on such terrible overplayed played maps. maybe you should play this game more before you write an article about it. get into the clan scene because thats where this game comes alive. I have to wonder why people play kingdomcliffs when there's antioch (same map, but with an added path to make it a little more interesting).  The ease with which the castle can be defended ruins both of them for me, though.

I think the term 'campers' is more general than

"5 – People who hide in places so that no-one can shoot them without coming in their line of fire."

Camping is generally thought of as sitting in one's base area and exploiting the fact that theres one route into the base. Under camping there are many derivations. I think you newbies now-a-days use a term called 'liner' that probably better fits your definition. However, this term is so base I'd almost rather be the person caught in my base 'lining' than the person actually using such a stupid term. I think a better way to refer to your description 5 would be to call such people 'carcoals.' Example: 'look at this fag carcoaling' , 'or look at this kid, he's a carcoal jr.' For it is carcoal that is notorious for evoking such a style of gameplay. Other terms that would fit the definition: 'gibbing, poneing, merling, pureblooding (essentially anyone who was in Crossbones)' the list could go on. Another derivation you might want to use at some point is that of 'hoboing.' Hoboing: the act of hiding behind objects and waiting for an enemy to run by to shoot them in the back.

Anyways, using these terms will allow you to kill two birds with one stone. First the term will more clearly refer to its definition (especially for people who have played these people) and secondly they will make fun of the specific person. Enjoy

No offense taken Briton...

Personally I think your idea is creative but if I were you, since you are pretty new to Paintball2, I would approach/display your writings as more of a weekly personal log or diary until you've gained a great deal more experience on more servers and possibly checked out the clan scene.

Also, the statement Cola makes "get into the clan scene because thats where this game comes alive." is only half truth...

BOTH pub play and clan play can be fun depending on whose playing and what your opinion of fun is.

Equally so, BOTH can be made into dreadful experiences. LOL

To be honest I've played the game a fair bit over the last year, and I find that Kingdom in the Cliffs is pretty fun on OTB Speed. I seem to have offended some sort of purist Paintballer that's lurking inside of you by saying this is the best the game has to offer, but since it's my personal choice and I think I have played the game enough to experience most of it I'll stand by my opinion. Also you clearly have not played that server enough, sometimes the same map can be voted in twice in a row. Thanks for the comments anyway.

I'm guessing your criticism is based on the first article in this series, which looking at it now is complete shite. I've taken it down from the site. I don't blame you for not reading the other articles, if I was in your position I wouldn't have. The first article of the Paintball series was something of an experiment, and from the criticism I can tell it had too many of the idiotic sayings that are shown in-game. Also I never said that I was the best at Paintball. Thanks for the criticism on it.

I would like to point out I've been playing for a year, but thanks for assumign stuff you do not know.

Over a year and you didn't even know that there were bots in the game?
Ok...

Oh and, in my oppinion, playing the game but not being involved with the community doesnt count  Smiley

also, when you say that you get a kill ration of more than one do you mean that you get 1 kill above your deaths? pfft, a good player gets no deaths  Tongue

I hardly count Jodi as a bot of any significance. No offence to who created Jodi, but s/he sometimes runs into walls and seems to revert to a strange patrol route mode. Plus she never catches the flag. Play your average shooter with bots and they do everything humans can do.

Jodi? Im assuming you are talking about a bot that someone pupt on his server. of course playing against one bot is stupiud but if you get around say 30 or 40 bots,  youll see some changes.

I have actually played against 20 bots on airtime, armed with autocockers and with about 4 other people. It was pretty good, but the only times you can get killed against bots is when they mass against you like that.

Also that comment about the deaths made me laugh, I don't think I've ever seen a player get away with no deaths before, unless they play one round then log off. Someone will always get you once or twice, its just the law of averages.

well my personal opinion is that there are alot of better maps out there and better servers. if im not mistaken OTB servers are hosted somewhere in germany? so i wouldnt go in that server to play because i would have a horribly high ping and for me thats just not fun. and by your name i'd say you live somewhere in england (correct me if i am worng) so your ping wouldnt be nearly as high as mine would. so i can see why you would choose to play in that server. but maybe you should rethink your approach for this article. throw in more servers more maps more styles of play. because by the way you had described the game if i hadnt played yet and read your article i would not have bothered even downloading this game. you could maybe get interviews with some of the more seasoned players. maybe an interview with jitspoe. there are alot of things you missed just by describing one server. spice it up. and i didnt mean to offend just threw in my opinion as requested.

I would like to point out I've been playing for a year, but thanks for assumign stuff you do not know.
oops Ma BaD

well it all depends on what you think. which would you rather do? play on a pub killing "NOOBIES" all day. or play in matches against skilled and smarter players, and eventually raise your skill level at the same time. i mean the only way to get better is to play people who are better than you. dont you think?

Thanks for the positive review, Skater. And Cola, I do appreciate what you are trying to say, but my aim was not to cover every aspect of Paintball 2 to one article (remember it's only 800 words). Give me a few months and I'll cover more servers, more maps and more types of play, don't you worry about that. And sorry if I sounded offended, I probably came off a little more angry then intended (which given Magalhaes' comment was hardly surprising).

Like I said, any form of criticism is appreciated as long as I can gain something from it. If you have any more ideas please post 'em. And is anyone else interested in interviews? Would you read them?

"It all depends" is exactly right... It depends on whether my goal is simply to have a good time playing with new players along side of the skilled players that actually play or... It depends on whether my goal is to increase my skill, be it to join a clan or just be a better independent player.

In case you have forgotten, new players have to start somewhere to gain the skill to be recognized by someone who might want them in there clan...

You, and others keep boasting about the clan scene as if there should be no pub...  How many reputable clans do you see inviting new players into their clan or making any attempt to teach them to play.

You said it yourself, the only way to get better is to play skilled and smarter players, Weeeeeelllll where shall they find these skilled players if we're not occasionally in PUB.

Sadly, a great many of these almighty great clansmen do nothing other than ridicule, make fun of, cuss out and beat down new players and people who play on the Public servers.

There's not one player in this game that didn't first start on pubs... It's where you got your experience and it was clearly fun for you or your ass wouldn't still be here.  I've done both and have seen good and bad in both.

Personally I enjoy the pubs and meeting new people and although at times there have been a lot of new players on the servers there are also many seasoned players there too so yes, It ALL depends Smiley

I checked the OTB Speed server on my lunch break, and it indeed only has ub_cliff and kingdomcliffs in rotation.

Edit: In fact, not only does it have this limited selection of maps in rotation, but other maps don't even exist on the server.  It doesn't even have the standard maps that come packaged with the game, like midnight, so you can't vote any different maps in for a change.

Might be time to find a different server to play on.

Are ya sure they're not adding bots with names to make themselves appear full?  I can't imagine anyone flocking to a server that only has 2 maps...

Nope, it's actual players.  I've been peeking at the server list off and on all day, and it has been on the top every time as far as the number of people playing.  19 people on there right now with ub_cliff and basically no elimination.  Yikes.  Bots don't show up on the server list.
