This is in no way complete but I'm posting what I have and will add what I remember. If you have any suggestions, reply and I'll see about adding it

2006 in Review
Year of the Dog

January
   1 – Paris Hilton is a stupid whore
   3 – Twelve coal miners found dead among one survivor in a coal mine collapse in the Sago Mine Disaster near Buckhannon, West Virginia
   4 - Second-ranked Texas defeats first-ranked USC 41-38 to win the Rose Bowl and the national championship   
   6 – The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, one of the worst in history, ends with Tropical Storm Zeta’s dissapation
   7 – Tom DeLay announces he will not resume his post
   24 – Actor Chris Penn, 40, brother of Sean Penn, dies of a drug overdose
   25 – Hamas, a known supporter of terrorism, wins the majority in the Palestinian Legislative Council elections
   26 – James Frey, author of A Million Little Pieces, is heavily chastised on national TV by Oprah Winfrey after she put the largely fabricated book (said to be wholly based on a true story) in her book club and then later found out it was made up
   30 – Coretta Scott King, 78, widow of Martin Luther King, Jr., dies of ovarian cancer
   31 – Sam Alito is sworn in as an associate justice in the US Supreme Court

   5 – Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 in Super Bowl XL
   7 – An Egyptian ferry carrying 1400 people sinks in the Red Sea off of Saudi Arabia
   10 – 2006 Winter Olympics begin in Turin, Italy
   11 – Vice President Dick Cheney accidentely shoots Harry Whittington in the face while hunting
   24 – Actor Don Knotts, 81, dies from lung cancer
   26 – Winter Olympics end

   3 – The first World Baseball Classic begins
   5 – 2006 Academy Awards: Crash wins Best Picture, Philip Seymour Hoffman wins Best Actor, Reese Witherspoon wins Best Actress, and Ang Lee wins Best Director
   6 – Dana Reeve, 45, activist and widow of Christopher Reeve, dies of lung cancer; Former Minnesota Twins and Hall of Fame player Kirby Puckett, 45, dies of complications from a stroke
   11 – Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, 64, found dead in his cell of a heart attack
   20 – The age of the battleship ends when the United States removes its two remaining Iowa-class battleships from its register

   28 – United 93, a movie about the events on Flight 93 on 9/11, is the first 9/11 movie released in theaters, less than five years after the attacks
   29 – Third anniversary of the Iraqi War

   1 – The Great American Boycott occurs across the United States in protest of the crackdown on illegal immigration
   3 – Terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui sentenced to life in prison
   6 – Barbaro wins the Kentucky Derby
   20 – Barbaro suffers a career-ending injury in the Preakness Stakes, fracturing three bones in and around the ankle of his rear right leg. Barbaro begins a road of recovery, surviving an infection around the injury
   27 – An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 hits Java in Indonesia, killing more than 6000; Angelina Jolie gives birth to daughter Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt

June
   3 – Montenegro declares independece and the country of Serbia and Montenegro is dissolved two days later; 17 men are arrested in Toronto for plotting to blow up targets in the area
   7 – Iraqi Al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is killed
   9 – 2006 FIFA World Cup begins in Germany
   19 – The Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Edmonton Oilers 4 games to 3 to win its first Stanley Cup
   20 – The Miami Heat defeat the Dallas Mavericks 4 games to 2 to win its first NBA title
   22 –Moose, 16, canine state of Frasier, dies
   23 – Seven men are arrested in Miami for plotting to blow up the Sears Tower and other targets; TV producer Aaron Spelling, 83, dies of complications from a stroke
   25 – Warren Buffet donates over $30 billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

July
   4 – Space Shuttle Discovery launches
   5 – North Korea test fires 7 missiles, including a long-range Taepodong-2
   7 – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest obliterates Spider-Man’s opening weekend record by making over $135 million on opening weekend
   9 – Italy defeats France 5-3 on penalties (score was tied 1-1) to win the World Cup
   12 – Israeli-Lebanon Conflict begins when Israeli troops invade Lebanon in reponse to Hezbollah kidnapping two Israeli soldiers. Hezbollah declares open war two days later
   23 – Floyd Landis wins the Tour de France but is later discovered to have failed a drug test
   28 – Mel Gibson is arrested of drunk driving and proceeds to spout off sexist and anti-Semitic comments. He later apologizes to the Jewish community
   31 – Cuban President Fidel Castro temporarily relinquishes power to his brother Raul before surgery

August
   10 – London Police arrest 21 people in connection to a terrorist plot to blow up numerous planes bound for the United States. As a result, many liquids and gels are banned from future flights
   11 – Talk show host Mike Douglas, 81, dies of unknown causes
   14 – A UN cease fire takes effect in the Israeli-Lebanon Conflict
   24 – Pluto demoted to the status of dwarf planet and the solar system now has eight planets
   27 – 2006 Emmys: 24 wins Best Drama Series, The Office wins Best Comedy Series, Kiefer Sutherland wins Best Actor in a Drama Series, Tony Shalhoub wins Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Mariska Hargitay wins Best Actress in a Drama Series, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus wins Best Actress in a Comedy Series
