Repeated head trauma can cause brain damage

« on: Jan 26, 2005, 04:13 PM »

k, sorry for the topic flurry, but I've had some ideas for good topics so I'm getting them out there while I'm thinking about it...

What's the hardest thing you've ever had to do as part of a game?

I was playing the demo of Forza Motorsport at EB this morning and it reminded me of my hardest task. It was part of the International A License Test in Gran Turismo 2. You had to take the Dodge Viper through the corkscrew at Laguna Seca in some certain amount of time. I remember it being crazy hard. Not sure how it would stack up now that I'm better at driving but it took me several hours to pass that test the first time.

Included are two pictures of the corkscrew for your viewing pleasure.

The first is a shot from across the corkscrew. Basically, you come barreling over the top of a hill and have to slam on the brakes and into the corkscrew. The second is a map of the area on the track. It focuses on the following turn but you can clearly see that the corkscrew is one helluva bend.

I remember that stupid turn in GT2. I hated it. Hit the stupid wall every single time.

I don't know what the hardest task I've ever done in a videogame. I bet it was related to Zelda: Ocarina of Time, though... like the stupid Water Temple...

Yeah, the Water Temple was definitely hard, too. So hard that I never finished it. I think I eventually just got bored of the game or trying and stopped playing. Maybe that should be my hardest gaming task...

You should finish it. Just get a walkthrough. That would be the only time you need it. The rest of the game is great if you can just get past that stupid temple.

Yeah, the rest of the game was fun. I remember playing through it like some sort of fiend. It came out the day before I had my wisdom teeth pulled so the day after that, I wasn't really feeling like doing much other than sitting in the bed all day playing Zelda. I had a hard time sleeping the day of the surgery and was up at 6am and started playing Zelda. I don't think I stopped until 9 or 10 that night.

Is there another Zelda in the Cube pipeline? There's already talk of PS3 and Xbox2 but I've not heard much of anything about what Nintendo has planned for the next generation. Is the timeline right to have another Zelda game before the next console is released?

It's supposed to come out on the Cube but knowing Nintendo, they might hold it for the Revolution and make it a launch title. Can you just imagine a Zelda game as a launch title? *drool*

Has a Zelda game ever been a launch title?

Nope

NES release: August 1985
The Legend of Zelda: July 1987
Console to game time: 1 year, 11 months

SNES release: September 1991
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past: April 1992
Console to game time: 7 months

Game Boy release: August 1989
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening: August 1993
Console to game time: 4 years

N64 release: September 1996
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: November 1998
Console to? game time: 2 years, 2 months

GameCube release: November 2001
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker: March 2003
Console to game time: 1 year, 4 months

Game Boy Advance release: March 2001
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap: January 2005
Console to game time: 3 years, 10 months

Nintendo DS release: October 2004
so far no original Zelda game
Console to present time: 3 months

And can't forget about this bad boy...
Virtual Boy release: July 1995
no original Zelda game

The quickest time between console release and a Zelda game was with the SNES: 7 months. The longest time would be with the Game Boy: 4 years.

Something I found in my research. It's a really cool picture of all the Game Boy systems lined up next to each other (the DS is not in this picture since it was just released): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/05/Gameboyline.jpg

The GBA SP is definitely not only the most capable Game Boy, it's also the best looking.

gotta say, main complaint with the DS is you cant play the original Gameboy games on it like you can with the SP.  my roomies got a DS which is tons of fun, but I'm sticking with my SP.

Some of those Quake2 jump maps are pretty tough... thuogh not really a task you need to complete. Smiley

Recently: NFSU2 -- some of those stupid drift races.  There was this one where you had to drift all the way down a long mountain road with traffic on it.  You'd be on this 30,000+ point drift and then hit a stupid taxi.  That race annoyed me... and made my wrist ache. Undecided

Oh, yeah, that irked me like no other. Fortunately, it was easy getting those mad drifts on the downhill mountain courses

those Drift races were normally the most fun though!  The one race where you have to go all the way down WAS a pain in the ass though.  Almost made me swear off drifting in the game for a long while.  But once I made it past that, I still loved the drifting.  That and the long ass races where the start and finish were far away.  BAM!  i wanna go play right now, but i have to grade papers... dammit.

I think I'm the only one that hasn't played NFSU2 yet. And I know two of you got it from me in the first place, haha.

Beanstalk may be the single easiest jumper out there, though... you should see some of the other ones, not to mention the surfing... lol
