Former President Gerald Ford has died at the age of 93.

Born Leslie King in Omaha, Nebraska, Ford was later adopted by his stepfather who changed his name.  Ford was the only President who was never elected to office.  He became Vice-President in 1973 when Spiro Agnew was forced to resign due to a scandle.  Ford was picked by Richard Nixon for Vice-President.  Upon Nixon's resignation in 1974, Ford became president.  He took the nation out from the shadow of Watergate and was there when the war in Vietnam ended.  He lost to Jimmy Carter for the Presidental election in 1976, largely because of the primaries between him and Ronald Reagan.  Gerald Ford was the oldest surviving president (Reagan was 93 as well but a few months younger).

To Gerald Ford, who might always be remembered by Chevy Chase's portrail of him as a clumsy guy (Ford was left handed - go Jerry, go), rest in peace.  And thank you for what you did for this country.

Gerald Ford was the first president I really remember when I was growing up.  He got me to notice politics and what it means to this great country.  Thank you for your time here.

Ouch.  Guess we know someone who won't be voting with the Democratics in the 2008 presidential election.

At least she won't have to worry about sex scandals if she does get elected.  I don't think any interns are that desperate!

I think only McCain would sway me to Republican right now but he wants to send more troops to Iraq so that's hurting him right for my vote

It is definitely a tough predicament we're in with Iraq and although I think we're in a no win situation myself I am curious as to what would be your solution for that situation...

I think we should ask them what they want and then deliver. We should pull our military out and just bring in people to help clean up the messes and leave it at that. But we should not be deciding what is right for someone else's country unless it's a big humanitarian mission (meaning getting Saddam) or there is a direct threat to our country.

My husband misses the idea of isolationism. I can't blame him.

Why? Iraq and the entire region will be forgotten once an alternative fuel source comes forth. There's another benefit to getting out of Iraq: Bin Laden can shut the hell up, fanatics will stop blowing up American troops, and then we'll have troops to spare for the inevitable war with North Korea.

Them being Iraq?  IMHO they're divided in a bad way anyway.  They sure can't take care of themselves and if we send people in to help clean up the mess we have to deal with the fear of those innocent people being kidnapped and having their throats cut for being Americans... Oh wait they kill their own now?

I can't think of ANYTHING we do as being something that will gain our respect in the middle east anymore.

You're husband's idea of isolationism may be right on the money. As far as I'm concerned though, taking the war to Iraq to has only postponed our demise.

----

elmono, North Korea is a fly on a pile of a mal norished canine's pile of doo and the least of our worries.  "Fanatics" have only multiplied like a plague and in their eyes, killing us will get them to heaven so they'll never stop blowing up American Troops or freedom loving people.  We are the "Infidels".

I had something else to share as a real eye opener to this subject but atm my eyes are being controlled by Jimmy B Black and it's not on this machine.  It was something my father sent to me that puts a whole lot of things into perspective.  I'll call him tomorrow and continue this when I'm sober and have the info Smiley

Yes, them being Iraq in a general term. They are a mess right now, though. You're right about that. Somehow it seems people are already being killed just because they're Americans. They're soldiers, but there are plenty of civilians being captured as well.

If it comes right down to it, I think the only way we can be spared is for the next president to pull us out of there completely and apologize to the people there for Bush's decisions.

Terrorist cells have begun to speak to the common American because they're starting to feel we are on the same side because of how much most of this country dislikes Bush. That scares me a lot that there is a person we AND the terrorists are against.

I don't want to see more people suffer, but we can't keep giving the lives of our people up for an endless war.

The insurgents are fighting with the belief it is a religious right and duty. There is no way to win against that and yes, if we can't help without causing more trouble then I think cutting and running is the way to go, but only after Bush is out of office.

Oh boy - a thread to salute a President who overcame never being elected and being there when we pulled out of Vietnam had turned into another "bash Bush" thread.

We are America and helping other countries is what we do.  One of the reasons I get a bit misty whenever I see the red, white, and blue.  And I'll say it yet again.  If you don't like this country, there are plenty more waiting for you.  We ain't perfect but upon looking at the options, I'll stay here, have my freedom and respect the person that resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue - whoever that is.
