Repeated head trauma can cause brain damage

« on: Jan 26, 2005, 03:42 PM »

I checked the bandwidth used on the server today and we made it past 1%. We've used 500MB in the past 2 weeks that the server's been up. I think the 50GB that I've got to use is going to be more than enough Tongue

Actually, that 500MB counts the front page, too. I guess the forums have only used about 350MB. Ah, well, 2% is still a milestone, hehe.

ha! do you really want us to use up all your bandwidth?  you wouldnt have time to actually have a job if we were using up that much bandwidth!

Perhaps, hehe. But I don't necessarily need to be here for posting craziness to occur. Smiley But yes, actually, it is better if more bandwidth is used. I've got 50GB per month and my entire site (the forums, planetsuper.com, and the Ideas of America site) hasn't even used 1GB in the past 2 weeks. There's plenty to go around.

Okay...I'm dumb so help me out. What things would help you to use more? Like...what can we do?

Not much, really. Every time the forums (or any part of the site, for that matter) are used, a little tiny bit of bandwidth is used. It's not much. A couple KB, maybe.

Really, the way that bandwidth gets used is from use, though. And as little bandwidth that forums use, there would have to be a lot of traffic to generate much bandwidth at all. Big forums like AnandTech probably use several GB per day. It wouldn't surprise me. So there either needs to be a lot of traffic or I need to host files or something. Files of substantial size, anyway.

Host files? Okay...we're moving forward with my learning, Teacher. What types of files? And by host, you mean...like pictures? Like pictures we could put on other sites? Or...what types?

Don't you love my mindless questions?

I wonder how many people will be reading LT41 (and thus taking up bandwidth) when it's released Smiley. It's up to 57 pages as I type right now. Longest LT story ever

Okay, let's start small Smiley If I were to post a link to a picture, it would have to be hosted somewhere. By hosted, I mean stored somewhere on some server. In this case, I would probably host it on my server, meaning that it's stored in the datacenter in Tampa. When someone clicks the link, the request eventually makes it to the server that's hosting this site and the server sends the requested file back to the user's machine. Bam. That's hosting. The forums work much the same way... When you clicked on the link to open this thread, your browser sent a request to the server saying "okay, this user wants to see this particular thread." So the server goes through the database and finds the required information to display the thread and makes an HTML document containing that information and sends it back to your browser, where it's displayed.

As for files, yes, pictures could be hosted. I was halfway tempted to write a picture hosting section of the site where users could login and upload pictures that would be hosted on my site and they could then link to them from other sites. I doubt if there's much demand for something like that, though.

But really, files of substantial size are things like mp3s and other bigger files. Images are actually quite small. The LT covers, for instance, are only 300KB or so. The average mp3 is probably 4MB. 4MB is like 13 or 14 times the size of 300KB. 1000KB = 1MB. Actually, it's 1024, but we'll just call it 1000 and be done with it so we don't confuse the issue. In bandwidth terms, you'd have to load 13 or 14 images 300KB in size to use the same amount of bandwidth that you could use by downloading one mp3 4MB in size just once.

I hope that makes some amount of sense and isn't totally rambling. It probably is. Ah, well, what can you do? I'm not an English major, after all.

Probably not many. And it of course depends on how big the file is. How big is it?

Are you kidding me? Have you never heard of photobucket? Hell, I was just bitching about not being able to do that and I ended up going to that site just last week. Now I need to figure out how to get pics of my cats up to put up on the one msg board that I'm on. In all honesty, I'd love to have pics up here so we can all share in stupid things. We can have a 'show us your pets' thread. And 'show us your kids'....I'm guessing that wouldn't be too big of a thread. LOL.

But you should think about it. I think it would be funky.

So far it's only 375 KB. It'll probably be bigger once I put it in PDF with all the other junk

Well then, I'll have to think about it. The massive coding job that is the LT Essential Guide comes first. I was discussing the database design with Nathan earlier... There's going to be a lot of work going into that. I told Chris earlier that it's too bad that the project is of the nature that it is... it's the type of thing you'd show to potential employers.

375KB is nothing, hehe. I've got 500MB total space and I'm not even using 50MB yet. The Ideas subdomain will definitely be the most storage-intensive subdomain on planetsuper.com, though, that's for sure. I don't see anything taking the bandwidth crown from the forums, though. They use like 4 times as much bandwidth as anything else.

What would be a good database design for an employer? Maybe I could help you with that. Yeah right. hehe

Well, the whole concept of the LT essential guide. It's a large project that would help showcase skills to employers. It's unfortunate that the content that it contains is inappropriate. Oh, well.

Haha, no, not so much. I believe it's allowed by my host as long as all involved parties are 18. But no, I'm not about to start a porn site. Smiley
