Before history repeats itself, I need to find a good way to prevent email spam for the login system. I had a couple ideas:
a) Captcha for anything that requires sending emails (such as account registration). b) Record IP history for anything that requires sending emails and only allow one per day.

cache ips in a database (i think text MIGHT be easier, but database is more secure), and keep them there for 12 hours. If the ip is already in the database, don't let the email send

Speaking of Global Login, im not spammed with a lot of emails, but there was no activation url (that worked) in my only email. why is that?

jitspoe, i think you need a different way then using IPs, because people have stuff that each time they connect to the internet their ip is changed. This goes for bans on servers, too. You ban people but they come right back in.

for a web based system, what else is there to use but ip? Maybe use cookies?

This is just to prevent rapid spam. I doubt somebody could change ip's rapidly enough to cause any serious damage.

Require cookies to be enabled before they register and fail the registration process if cookies aren't enabled. Simple.

Easier to clear cookies than it is to change ip's.

It probably got spam filtered. Try registering again with a different email address. Didn't I manually activate your account, anyway?

Edited to add require captchas. You could capture the IP address. The only fairly easy way now to change IP addresses is through dialup, or if you use AOL or one of the other portal providers like Yahoo, just reconnect. Liek in AOL, you are going through a proxy, so you can't ban the IP of that proxy without having collateral damage. I would not consider IP based banning or registration as a primary means of lockout or authentication.

Uhhh Ummm they help defend our great country LOL!! Ohhhh you're talking about the game... I liked AA until the last time I went to update it I found out the hard way that it requires more resources to run the game than Quake 4 which also turned out to be a flop
