Wow, the Orioles might finally have a chance at a high-profile player this year after being shot down numerous times already. Apparently Texas withdrew their bid for Delgado and Delgado never responded to the Mets by their deadline, leaving only Baltimore and Florida in the running. I also read that Delgado's number one choice is Baltimore and he's pals with Miguel Tejada. And the Orioles do need a starting first baseman since Palmeiro isn't cutting it anymore

Fortunately, they have no interest in him. Unfortunately, the Mets are back in the game to acquire him. They need to back off because they've already spent big money on players. Orioles need something to compete against the Yankees and Boston (which is the reason why the other teams in the AL East find it hard to acquire free agents)

Hey, I happen to think Raffy is an awesome first baseman.  Sure, he's only won a couple of Gold Gloves, but he's a solid player.  But, from a lifelong O's fan, nobody compares to Boog Powell.  You should have seen the biceps on that guy.  Now he runs his own barbecue restaurant at Camden Yards.  One of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet.  Signed a beer can for me back in the 80s, during his stint shiller for Lite Beer from Miller.

Money talks, players walk.
Actually, in this case, a proven contender sounds better than a possible contender.

Even with Beltran and Martinez, the Mets are a still a question mark in the NL East.  The Marlins have no reason to believe they won't still be competitive, even without Pavano (he did end up signing with the Yankees, right?).

I'd laugh if the Orioles actually managed to get to the World Series this year and all those players who skipped Baltimore because of New York and Boston dominating the AL East would feel so stupid

The Orioles seem to do fine at the beginning and the end of the season. It's the middle they need work on

Yeah, June is when they swoon.? Like that?? Damn, I'm good.? As I've mentioned to elmono before, their young pitching seems to hit the wall about midseason, and I guess all the sucking and getting pulled early for relievers keeps them fresh for the end of the season.? Like it's a management formula they think will work.? That team is capable of winning 12 in a row, followed by a 14 game losing streak.? Which they did last year.?

Of course, I think the Orioles need to be more aggressive with acquiring talent. Just because they had one incident of spending big money and it going down the drain (Albert Belle) doesn't mean they should never do it again. At least they paid the bucks for Tejada.

The Orioles have plenty of money to spend on talent, they just don't use it

There's one good thing about Delgado and that's his ability to have his name manipulated for SportsCenter.
