You might remember the DSM remake of Arctic (pbcup.bsp) I started a long time ago. It's my "vacation map". I have it on the laptop and work on it whenever I'm bored and not at my apartment. I made some headway this holiday season, and here are some new shots: I've been trying to use realistic proportions. This poses problems for things like barrels that we're accustomed to seeing be 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide. Stacking up barrels to the height they were in the original arctic looks a bit... unstable. I might have to settle for barrels somewhere in between and make the stacks 3 barrels tall instead. Shot from the tower bunker in the blue base. A shot of the blue side from a different angle. I tried to make the rocks look a bit more natural and realistic. I also threw in a couple extra ledges to hopefully make the gameplay more interesting. You might notice the tunnel behind the tower bunker. This goes back to the flag to make it a little less campable. I'm not sure if I should make that DSM or just keep it always open. The purple side. Close-up of the ladder. BSP has a really handy clone/offset function that makes ladder creation really easy. I'll have to do a tutorial on that sometime. Purple base with less than 4 players per team. Purple base expanded to support 4+ players. An entirely new path (about the size of the current pbcup.bsp) is added. I haven't gotten too far with the new path. I'm thinking of blocking off the barrel/ice area and opening an even larger path to support like 16+ players, but I don't know about that yet. It might be difficult to design it well enough to keep the r_speeds down (unless I can make DSM support areaportals), plus it's a lot of work for parts of the map which might hardly get played.

You have to scroll to see all of each screenshot. The forum theme here is kind of narrow.

It's not to the beta stage yet. The alternate paths have not been completed.

idk maybe you should stick to the original idea or pbcup. i think the extra path might not be and fun with it as it is without. i know personally i hate sdcup with that alternate path. i think its better without it. JMO.

The point of DSM is to make the map expand when there are more players. I'm sure you don't like how cramped arctic gets when there are lots of players on it. sdcup isn't very good because the paths aren't balanced at all.

i really don't mind playing with alot of people its just that there aren't enough guns and supplies to accommodate the extra amount of people. well who knows this version might be better than the original. looks awesome though.

...which is why extra equipment would be added on the map and on the DSM path.

To me, I do feel cramped in the original. It makes it hard to stay alive. For those who like to play in open spaces (me) this should be a better map than original: =]

Just wondering, will you still be able to rush as fast as on pbcup. For example high barrels, tower to X to barrels, etc?

Yeah, I positioned and scaled everything as closely as I could to the original, so you should be able to do all the same trick jumps and whatnot. This is intended to be a replacement for pbcup.bsp, so I want to keep all the little tricks and strategies people like about the original and expand on it, both visually and with DSM additions. When it gets to the beta stage, I'll let you pick apart anything you don't like that has changed from the original.

Sounds good, I like how it looks. I like the snow detail. Hopefully the new path doesnt take away from the original feel.

Speaking of the new path, here are a couple early shots of it. It's still under heavy development and may look very different in the final version. I'm open to suggestions, too.

More fog. It'd be nice if in future builds you could specify a maximum density for the fog, so it wouldn't become opaque.

I like the wall banners that you can jump up on from the steps and see the center in the original. Will there be anything like that in this one?

Obviously not, look how high the walls are. That was a cheap way to wallhack anyways.

It was a clever camp spot to reach, and I've never heard anyone referring to it as a wallhack. Wall height has nothing to do with what I'm talking about anyway...
