NASCAR Awards

I consider the NASCAR Awards ceremony like a bad accident. It's terrible but you just have to watch it.
Whatever gave anyone the idea that Jay Mohr is funny? When the man has to tell the audience to laugh at his jokes, he ain't funny. Referring to the Crew Chief of the Year's four race suspension for cheating was highly inappropriate. Chad Knaus was sitting at the head table, for goodness sake.
We thought Jewel's dress was going to fall off. It was horrible to begin with, maybe it should have. The songs she chose to sing, in my opinion, were not appropriate for NASCAR. It's a fast sport, she sang really slow songs. I'm sure they could have found another singer who is a NASCAR fan to sing something a little more upbeat.
Kasey Kahne makes great commercials but he's not a great public speaker.
The hour preshow on Speed with John Roberts, Jimmy Stewart, and Kenny Wallace was, as usual, great. Even with Melissa Rivers on the black and yellow carpet interviewing the drivers as they arrived was good. At least she had Michael Waltrip with her to let her know what to ask some of them. They could have used Wendy Ventereni a bit more, though.
My suggestion for next year. Have the Speed guys do the entire MCing of the awards. Jimmy and Kenny can provide the humor since they are way funnier than Jay Mohr and John can tell everyone how much each driver earned (down to the last dollar). Get someone like Gretchen Wilson to do the music. Might lighten up some of the drivers.

I didn't really care for the awards this year. Jay Mohr had to tell people to laugh because I could tell the audience was kind of high strung... with the exception of Jeff Gordon, who knew how to have a good time at one of these things. I think Mark Martin was another who knew just to let loose as I saw him cracking up many times. I guess it's because those two drivers have been to the awards banquet many many many times over their careers and probably know how boring it can get.
Bill Weber... get off the stage.
