High School Student Gets Head Smashed Into Curb
Dan Rascon
Reporter
(KUTV) HERRIMAN - A 17-year-old boy was sent to the hospital after he received a brutal beating, in the form of a new punishment called “curbing.”
Gavin Lyon, a senior at Bingham High School, was beaten last Friday night. Family and friends believe he was “curbed” – a violent maneuver where a person’s head is placed against a concrete curb on a street, and someone steps on the back of the head. In most cases, this procedure causes the jaw to break along with several teeth.
"It's a terrible thing… I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy," said Jeff Lyon, Gavin’s father.
Gavin sustained a broken jaw, several broken teeth, a fractured neck and his sinus cavity was crushed. Doctors have also placed a titanium plate inside of his head.
"It's everything you can do not to go get a gun and hunt somebody down,” Gavin’s father said. “But I have confidence things will be taken care of."
Exactly what happened to Gavin is unclear. The boy is reportedly having a hard time remembering the incident. Family members also say he is scared to talk.
The beating happened along a quiet street in Herriman, last Friday night. Those responsible have not been caught yet – even though many students at Bingham High School say they know who is responsible.
The family is making a plea for the suspects to turn themselves into the police. Gavin’s father says this type of a beating is almost incomprehensible.
"I just can't believe that kids can be this cruel to one another," he said.
