Saw this on another forum I go to:

Quote from: ModMastaofDark
I was listening to a CGW podcast and one of the guys was talking about that in the retail package there is a warning card that basically says that the IGN software will track your IP address along with computer habits and make offers to you based on these habits.  Also BF2142 has in game adversting that can change at any time.

I'm not making any comment on what I think about it but just a warning

I don't know if it's true or not, but I'm already planning on not getting the game.

I already knew about the advertising. And isn't there something illegal about doing that because I recall Sony getting nailed big time for that software they put on their CDs that installed things on people's computers without them knowing.

I read into it. The only thing it tracks is if you view an ad or not in the game. The game would already have your IP since, obviously, it's an online game. I told Super most of their hits would come from the ad haters who will be shooting up the billboards

ALSO, you HAVE to install the 1.0.1 patch BEFORE you play the game or things get really messed up!

alright, the game is awesome nonetheless!  Making rank seems easier... I made it to the third rank today! Also earned 2 awards already,... neither of which is a purple heart.  I only played for about an hour too.

Yeah, the rank progression is scaled down, I think, because some of the more basic equipment are unlocks.

Nathan and I tried playing BF2 last night and in 30 minutes, I crashed to desktop THREE times, two of which my computer was effectively frozen (as in, all I could do was Ctrl-Alt-Del and restart, couldn't even kill the BF2 process). It's shit like that combined with the spyware in BF2142 that makes me want to just wait for Quake Wars.

All 2142 does is report your location so you don't get a French ad and anonymously catalogs how many times an ad was viewed and blah blah

It's still bullshit. Ads in games is bullshit.

I've seen a French one that said, "Used gun for sale, only dropped once."

Doing a google image search for french ads yields disturbing results.

I'm afraid to look.

However, this does remind me of a phone call I got at work today. I don't know if anyone was around to tell about it after it happened but some supplier called spam called us to try to get us to use them for parts and stuff. Yeah, slightly Canadian. She said "eh?" at least 4 times and even threw in an "aboot" for good measure. After the first "eh?" I was like *blink blink* What did she just say? Then she said it again and I was trying not to laugh. Silly Canucks.

And, from another forum I frequent:
Quote
Earlier today EA released a patch to the EA Downloader which effectively uninstalled EA Downloader and then installed the new “EA Downloader” which is called EA Link. Due to the uninstall it deleted all of the information associated with the cdkey of the game you purchased making the BF2142 that you had installed useless. By useless I mean whenever ANYONE connects to a server they are greeted with the message “Invalid CDKey”. If you are one of the lucky ones to manage to be able to connect to a server eventually 2-3 minutes down the line you will be kicked from the server by Punkbuster telling you that you have a “duplicate key”.
media.jpg

If you did not know of this situation by now it is most likely because you do not own BF2142, which I would have to say at this point, good for you and do not get it. There remains no solution to the problem at this moment as EA has yet to respond 10+ hours later but you can at least join in the fun on the EA message boards and tell them how much you hate them here.

In the end I would like to thank EA for proving to everyone why no one should buy your games…yet again.

Wow, how in the world did they let that happen? It's not like EA Downloader has to be optimized for varying computers like video games do...

I don't know if Jits and his friend want to keep us pballers locked up in our subforum or not, but I'm going to comment on this. Cheesy

BF2142 is a great, great game. I don't trust keys distributed over the internet, ever, which is why I actually bought the game. It worked fine. For the most part, the ads fit in with the game, but there aren't many that are actually advertising products now. I've noticed an ad for some Intel processor once or twice, and that's about it. There really aren't that many ads in-game.

I'm still lovin 2142, and think I've spent almost as much time on it as BF2 already.  I'm looking to hit BF2 a lil stronger again soon, but 2142 is addictive.
