I think it's a bad idea since the charm of the show was also the cheesy special effects

yeah but that brings up the question.... effects-wise, was Star Wars better after the Special Editions came out? (not talking about Greedo shot first crap...)  I would argue so. 

will these effects make Shatners acting any better? Nope, so that'll still be preserved, so itll all be good.

Yeah, that CG looked pretty bad by today's standards.  Why bother remaking it if you're not going to make it look good?
