How is it useless? From the little bit I heard of it, it sounded decent.

Are you baseball's new steroid policy?  If so, I vote yes!

Here's the link to the story, BTW

http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb_news.jsp?ymd=20050113&content_id=930789&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp

It seems fine to be, considering baseball games are played more often than other sports. 10 days is about 7 or so games missed. Add into the fact that if the MLB suspects that any player is using steroids, they can test that player. And for offseason buffing up on steroids? They have that covered, too. They're allowed to test in the offseason, no matter what country the player is in. With this new random drug testing, people like Barry Bonds can't hide from it.

Compare these two:

MLB Policy

? The penalty for a first-time offender will be a 10-day suspension
? second time, 30 days
? third time, 60 days
? fourth time, one year

? All suspensions will be without pay.

NFL Policy

? First Positive Test: Medical evaluation (if Advisor directs) and suspension for four regular and/or postseason games
? Second Positive Test: Medical evaluation (if Advisor directs) and suspension for six regular and/or postseason games
? Third Positive Test: Minimum one-year suspension
? Positive Test in Preseason: Two week preseason suspension in addition to suspension for prescribed number of regular and/or postseason games

? Players will not be paid during suspensions
? Players are subject to discipline for positive tests at any time during the year

Yeah, I saw the comparison on SportsCenter this morning and I thought about posting the same thing here. They pointed out that the first offense for an NFL player is 4 games... that's a quarter of the regular season. Make a baseball player miss 40 games for his first offense and the policy would be a lot better, but the way it is now, it's a step in the right direction.

If they try to make it any harsher, the Player's Association might reject it so they have to do what they can do

I don't think it's useless. Useless would be not doing anything at all. It's a start.

Yeah, definitely. It's not great, but it's better than nothing and it's better than what they had.

I don't understand how a policy as strict as the NFL's got accepted but anything more strict than the MLB's would probably get rejected. Anyone know why this is the case?

The owners in baseball are greedy. I don't think Selig runs MLB, I think Steinbrenner does...

Football players are men.  Baseball and basketball players are just a bunch of thugs or whining babies.  I'd make a comment on hockey players, but that would be useless.  The one thing with steroid testing is that they should be able to test someone if it is suspected they are on dope.  This "we can only randomly test, and they weren't selected" crap needs to go.  Hell, in the military, if I suspected someone on being doped up I could send them straight to the hospital for testing.  Sure, they had their random pee tests, but that was just to give some poor sap the pleasure of monitoring the tests.  Fortunately, I was never tapped for that "pleasure".

Not all football players are men... example: Randy Moss

I don't like all football players, but a lot of them seem cool. Basketball players are thugs. You're right on that one. But baseball players? Most baseball players are true athletes and wonderful men that participate in fundraisers, charities, and appear to care about their fans. Example - Cal Ripken Jr...and Sr for that matter. There's even a guy on the Yankees that makes it a point to go to the Baltimore Orioles fan weekend because that is where he started his career and he loved the fans because they loved him.

As for hockey, I like some of them. Jagr is a stud, but I've heard he's lacking on personality. Either way, I'm sick of the athletes demanding more and more when they already have enough, but yet we have homeless that can't get meals to keep themselves healthy. Sorry McCarthy, but Yay for communism.

That guy on the Yankees would be Mike Mussina... one of Baltimore's great former pitchers

Mussina is a traitor in my mind.  I don't hate him, but no Oriole "great" should ever become a Skankee.  Brooks Robinson in pinstripes?  Never happen.  Cal Ripken in pinstripes?  Oh my!

I guess with my comment about football players, I was not including wide receivers.  They are the basketball players of football.

Well, what bothers me so much is that the Players Union is supporting this sort of behavior by making it easier to get away with.  You would think if anyone cared about the integrity of the game, it would be the people who play it.  I guess this is just reinforcing my views of baseball that really came up w/the strike-shortened Series-canceling season a while ago... This agreement just seems like such a half-assed attempt to address a problem and it's really disappointing to see this as the result of all their "hard work".  Might as well have just said "Yeah, use steroids all you want, just don't get caught 3 times".

Yeah, I call him a traitor, too, but Vengeance doesn't let me anymore
