This is why I hate religion most of the time

From the IMDb:
The Da Vinci Code has come under another barrage of criticism after one of the favorites in last year's bid to become Pope, Cardinal Francis Arinze, slammed the book and film adaptation in a TV documentary. Arinze called for Christians worldwide to "do something practical" to destroy the so-called blasphemous tract, written by Dan Brown. He slammed the controversial work as a violation of basic human rights, contending Christians should have their "religious beliefs respected." Speaking on documentary The Da Vinci Code - A Masterful Deception, Arinze fumes, "Christians must not just sit back and say it is enough for us to forgive and to forget. Sometimes it is our duty to do something practical. Any film produced on the basis of that book is already in error from the word go, no matter how interesting it might appear." Last month, another Vatican cardinal, Angelo Amato, demanded the Tom Hanks-starring film be boycotted.
Once again... IT'S FICTION!!! So it's alright to the church for Muslims being stereotyped as terrorists? It's alright to them that Wiccans are usually portrayed as evil witches? It's not okay for Dan Brown to believe what he so chooses? This is another case of the church trying to muscle its influenced onto other people. This guy is a friggin moron. Can he show absolute proof than nothing in that book is fact? Can he show absolute proof that the Bible is fact? See, that's the thing. It's about believing. Dan Brown believes in what he wrote (or just wrote it just to make a good book). This dumb ass Cardinal guy believes that Jesus sacrificed himself for everyone's sins and then came back from the dead. I don't believe in either of those things. So if I wrote a book about my beliefs will the church go all gung ho on me and try to force its will on me? See, these morons need to realize
this
is the reason why no one goes to church anymore. People realize how stupid they are for trying to force issues and get all up in arms about the stupidest thing. IT'S A BOOK! IT'S A MOVIE! The book is in the gorram fiction aisle of the book store for a reason! The movie is not classified as a documentary for a reason! IT'S FICTION!!! *sigh* The church is going to be the downfall of this civilization, not some nuclear war in the future. Isn't that why the Roman Empire fell because of religion?

Hopefully, this isn't giving away any spoilers, but why doesn't the church just go to the location of the last scene in the book and just find out what is there? Wouldn't that solve the church's confusion?
